- What is a *Mental Disorder*?
- Any behavior or emotional state that causes an individual great suffering or worry, is self-defeating or self-destructive, or is maladaptive and disrupts the person's relationships of the larger community.
- Beyond the DSM, clinicians should also evaluation a patient according to five axes (or dimensions), what are they?
- 1. Primary clinical problem, 2. Ingrained aspects of the clients personality, 3. Medical conditions, 4. Socio-cultural stressors, 5. A global assessment of the client's overall level of functioning.
- What are "Projective Tests*?
- Psychological tests used to infer a person's motives, conflicts, and unconscious dynamics on the basis of the person's interpretations of ambiguous stimuli.
- What are *Objective Tests*?
- Standardized objective questionnaires requiring written responses; they typically include scales on which people are asked to rate themselves.
- What is the *Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, [MMPI]?
- A widely used objective personality test.
- What is a *Generalized Anxiety Disorder*?
- A continuous state of anxiety marked by feelings of worry and dread, apprehension, difficulties in concentration, and signs of motor tension.
- What is a *Posttraumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD]*?
- An anxiety disorder in which a person who has experienced a traumatic of life-threatening event has symptoms such as psychic numbing, reliving of the trauma, and increased physiological arousal.
- What is a *Panic Disorder*?
- An anxiety disorder in which a person experiences recurring panic attacks, periods of intense fear, and feelings of impending doom or death, accompanied by physiological symptoms such as rapid heart rate and dizziness.
- What is a *Phobia*?
- An exaggerated, unrealistic fear of a specific situation, activity, or object.
- What is *Agoraphobia*?
- A set of phobias, oftens set off by a panic attack, involving the basic fear of being away for a safe place or person.
- What is *Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder*?
- An anxiety disorder in which a person feels trapped in repetitive, persistent thoughts [obsessions] and repetitive, ritualized behaviors [compulsive] designed to reduce anxiety.
- What is *Major Depression*?
- A mood disorder involving disturbances in emotion (excessive sadness), behavior (loss of interest in one's usual activities), cognition (thoughts of hopelessness), and body function (fatigue and loss of appetite)
- What is *Biplor Disorder*?
- A mood disorder in which episodes of both depression and mania (excessive euphoria) occur.
- Define *Vulnerability-Stress Models*?
- Approaches that emphasize how individual vulnerabilities interact with external stresses or circumstances to produce mental disorders.
- What are *Personality Disorders*?
- Rigid, maladaptive personality patterns that cause personal distress of an inability to get along with others.
- What is *Narcissistic Personality Disorder*?
- A disorder characterized by an exaggerated sense of self-importance and self-absorption.
- What is *Borderline Personality Disorder*?
- A disorder characterized by intense but unstable relationships, a fear of abandonment of others, an unrealistic self-image and emotional volatility.
- What is *Antisocial Personality Disorder [APD]*?
- A disorder characterized by antisocial behavior such as lying, stealing, manipulating others, and sometimes violence; and a lacak of guilt, shame, and empathy. (Sometimes called psychopathy or sociopathy)
- What is *Dissociative Identity Disorder*?
- A controversial disorder marked by the apparent appearance within one person of two or more distinct personalities, each with its own name and traits; commonly knows as Multiple Personality Disorder.
- What is *Schizophrenia*?
- A psychotic disorder or group of disorders marked by positive symptoms (e.g. delusions, hallucinations, disorganized and incoherent speech, and inappropriate behavior) and negative symptoms (e.g. emotional flatness and loss of motivation.)
- What is *Psychosis*?
- An extreme mental disturbance involving distorted perceptions and irrational behavior; it may have psychological or organic causes.
