- In the Red
- Sound levels are way to high. Another term for Pinning. Best thing to do is to ride the gain adjusting the level from time to time to keep the sound out of the mud and oout of the red. Fluid hand required. Don't ever jerk the meters.
- AUX send
- Feeds input signal to an external reverb system - "Dry" is an input signal sent that needs reverb effect added, "Wet" is the finished ouput signal that now has a reverb effect.
- Mic - Line Input Selector
- Controls which signal source enters the input section.
- EQ
- an electroinc device taht alters signal frequency response by boosting or attenuating the level of selected portions of the audio spectrum.
- Bar Graph MeterS
- Electronic meters, 2 types LED or Plasma Display. In the LED, green is safe and red means overload. Generally not as accurate as the VU and the PPM. The plasmas will display columns of light, accuracy within one dB
- Dynamics Section
- Used for added signal processing includes compression limiting and noise gating.
- Channel Monitor Control
- Switches the equalizer, dynamics and usually selected send functions into either the channel signal ath tothe reorced or the monito signal path to the monitor section.
- I/O Section
- Process and Delegates incoming signals and sends them to the recoder. During the mixdown, the I/O processes signals from the recorder and routes them to the master section where they are combind and sent to the master recorder.
- Cue Send
- A monitor function that routes a signal from the input channel to the headphone or foldback system ( a monitor system that feeds signals from teh sonsole to the headphones). The volume at cues send is the onle affecting the channels cue send level.
- Solo & PFL
- Cuts off all other channels feedng the monitor system allowing you to hear on channel at a time. Has no effect on the output system.
- Channel Assignmnt Switches
- groups of switches on each I/O channel used to direct the signal from the channel to one or more outputs; or several input signals can be comdined and sent to the one output. An active combining network is an amplifier at which the outputs of two or more signal paths are mixed togther to feed a single track of recorder
- Mic Preamp
- Increases the voltage of a Mic's signal to a useable level.
- In the Mud
- sound levls are way to low.
- Phantom Poer
- When ctivated, provides voltage for capacitor mics thus eliminating the need for batteries.
- Precent of Modulation
- Percentage of an applied signal in relation to the maximum signal a sound system can handle
- Mute
- Turns off signals from the I/O channel prevents unwanted channel noise from reaching the output.
- Overload Indicator
- tells you when the input signal is approaching or has reached overload and is clipping. LED, flashes red.
- Filter
- Alters the frequenct repsonse by attenuating frequencies above, below, or at a preset point.
- Trim
- Gain control that charges the input sensitivities the nominal impit levels of various input sources. Trim boasts the lower - level sources prevents overload.
- Channel and Monitor Faders
- Faders taht slide or pots that rotate. One controls the channel level of the signal being recorded and its monitor level, respectivley.
- PPM (Peak Program Meter)
- Used for meausring loudness, fasterthan a VU meter, indicates peaks in the level, insead of averages. More specific, used more frequently in Europe for some reason.
- Meter
- A volume indicator for each input channel, to indicate the lovel of the post fader signal. common is the USA's VU meter (Volume Unit) respeonds to change in electric energy and the indicator is usually a needle or an LED. The energy level is excessibley high, the volume meter will Pin (the needle slams against the meter's extreme right hand side.) Pinning can damage the VU meter's mechanism making it unreliable
- CMRR
- Common Mode Rejection Ratio - Ratio between signal gain an interference rejection
- Postfader Cue
- the main channel affects the cuesend level. Pre and post fader contorls add flexibility in providing a suitable headphone mix to preformers.
- Polarity Reversal
- Invers the polarity of an input signal by 180 degrees, used to revers polarity of miswired equipment.
- Head Room
- The signal level equipment can take above working level before overload takes place. In digital recording, there is no such thing as Head Room.
- Pan Pot (Panoramic Potentiometer)
- shift proportion o the sound from any point left to right between 2 output buses and the loud speakerts necessary for reproducing a stereo image.
- Pad
- Reduces the power of its signal used when the trim by itself cannot prevnt overload in the mic signal.
- Clipping
- Another term for Distorion.
