- What are the four phases of mitosis?
- Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
- What happens in the Prophase stage of mitosis?
- Chromosomes condense and organize, nuclear membrane and nucleoli disappear
- What happens in the metaphase stage of mitosis?
- Spindles line up duplicated chromosomes
- What happens in the anaphase stage of mitosis?
- Centromeres of each duplicated chromosome are separated
- What happens in the telophase stage of mitosis?
- Chromosomes uncoil and nucleoli reappear
- What is meiosis preceded by?
- interphase
- What is the main difference between mitosis and meiosis?
- Mitosis produces somatic cells, meiosis produces germ cells.
- Who was Mendel?
- The father of genetics, started growing and blending peas together in his garden.
- How many recessive traits must one have for it to be expressed?
- Two
- What is homozygous?
- When you have two genes that are the same. A person CAN have two dominant traits
- What is heterozygous?
- where one trait is dominant and the other is recessive.
- What is a genotype?
- The genetic makeup
- What is a phenotype?
- Traits that are PHYSICALLY expressed. Rolling your tongue, earlobes, etc
- What is a gene pool?
- All of the alleles for all of the genes in a population
- What is an autosomal?
- A chromosome not directly involved in determining the sex of an organism. IN mammals, for example, any chromosome other than X or Y
- What are gametes?
- Either a sperm or an egg. Not important to know the gender for just ordinary traits.
- What are sex linked traits?
- They affect mostly males, hemophilia is an example. And color blindness
- What is a dihybrid cross?
- An experimental mating of individuals differing at two genetic loci.
- What are the four types of nitrogenous bases of DNA?
- Adenine, Cytosine, Thymine, and Guanine
