Cantada
Very short unstaged opera’s. Written for instruments and one or two voices and
portrayed a single scene
Chorale
a hymn with a steady rhythm and simple tune, usually sung in unison by the Whole congregation
Orratorio
Large scale work like an opera, but is based on a sacred story and it isnt staged.
Narrator sings the story, and other singers sing the words of the people.
Basso Continuo
continuous bass, bass line that is never silent
rececitive
designed to imitate as closely as possible the freedom and expressiveness of speech
Aria
lyrical part of an opera
Sonata
Chamber piece of several contrasting movements, written for a small number of
Instruments
solo players and an orchestra
Overture- instrumental introduction, fast slow fast
De Capo Aria
sung by a soloist with the accompaniment of instruments, often a small orchestra
Ritornello
A short, recurring instrumental passage in Baroque aria and concerti, particularly in a tutti section.
fugue
A composition, or compositional technique, in which a theme (or themes) is extended and developed mainly by imitative counterpoint.
Concerto
Larger composition, involved solo players and an orchestra
