- cells that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream

- most are multicellular with exception to unicellular goblet cells

- fx: ion pumping;absorption,secretion,protection;found in ovaries,thyroid gland,kidney tubules;
- non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
- must be kept moist by bodily secretions to prevent drying out;found in cornea,oral cavity,vagina,rectum,esophogus

- top layer is flat but other layers may not be;can be keratinized or not;covers surfaces needing protection;cells bound tightly together
- stratified cuboidal epithelium
- found in sweat & salivary glands
- multicellular glands
- have many cells that may form a secretory sheet of epithelium in the linings of stomach & uterus
- glandular epithelium
- made up of cells that produce secretions classified as endocrine or exocrine;number of gland cells & nature of secretion;example is columnar epithelium with goblet cells
