how do cell phones work
sound enters the microphone as a sound wave, an analog to digital converter chips coverts your voices sound waves into digital signals, digital signal processor compresses the digital data, which is then transmitted as a radio wave though celluar network to the desitnation phone.
incoming calls--the digital sound processers decompress the incoming message. an amplifier boosts the signal to make it loud enough and it is passed to the speaker.
why is a cell phone considered a computer?
they have the same components as a computer; a processor, memory, input/output devices. it requires softwear and has its own operating system. They can handle e-amil, picutres , and even video

what are laptop computers? compare them with a desktop PC.
lap is the most powerful moblie computing solution. they have large displays and all of the computer power of a full desktop system.
both can be equipped with DVD/CD-RW drives, large hard drives. laptops dont last as long, are smaller and lighter, their individual parts are more expensive, more prone to damage
what is a network? what are the devices that are connected to a network called?
two or more computers that are connected together via softwear and hardware so they can communicate. devices that are connected to a network are called nodes.
what are the benefits of a network
allow users to share peripherals
ability to transfer files from one computer to another without using external storage media
shared directories, sharing internet connection
what is network architecture? name the two main ways a network can be controlled?
is the design of a network. networks can be controlled locally or centrally
locally controlled --peer to peer
centrally controlled-- client-server
explain in breif the difference between a client/server network and peer to peer network
peer to peer networks cost less so they are more often used in the home. peer to peer networks each node connected to the network can communicate with every other node on the netork insted of having a seperate device to have control over the network.
client/server networks generally comprise of 10 or more nodes, contains 2 different types of computers cliens and servers. the client is the computer which accomplishes the task, the server provides information/resources to the clinet and acts as a central control for functions of the network.
what are the main components of every network?
transmission media, network adaptors, netowkr navigation devices, and networking softwear
what are the types of peer to peer network? what is the major difference in thses networks?
powerline networks, phoneline networks, ethernet networks, and wireless networks.
the major difference in these networks are the transmission media by which the nodes are connected
what is a device driver?
softwear you instal on your computer; when you attach new devices to your computer the device driver allows your OS to interact with the device.
who is a cyber-criminal
individuals who use computers, networks, and the Internet to perpetrate crime
what is a hacker? who many catagories of hackers exist, name them?

((polymorphic, mulipartie, steath virus))
how will you protect your computer from viruses?
instal and run antivirus softwear thats up to date.
CNS (Central Nervous System)
The brain and spinal cord.

Three divisions in the brain: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.

Localization: idea that there are specific parts of the brain for specific components of behavior.
Forebrain
CEREBRAL CORTEX: The top portion of the brain, divided into two halves called the CEREBRAL HEMISPHERE

CORPUS CALLOSUM: the bundle of nerves that connect the two hemispheres of the brain, without these the two hemispheres wouldnt be able to communicate

The cerebral cortex is divided up into four lobes, the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes.

Limbic system: located on the underside of the cerebral cortex, involved in memory, emotional behavior, and mating or reproduction.

Basal Ganglia: The subdivision in control of movement

Thalamus: The "neural switchboard". A relay station for the different parts of the brain.

Hypothalamus: control of the endocrine system, and works with the limbic system to control behavior such as agression, eating, protection and mating (Four F's - fighting, fleeing, feeding and fucking)
FOUR MAJOR DIVISIONS OF THE CEREBRAL CORTEX: FRONTAL, OCCIPITAL, PARIETAL AND TEMPORAL LOBES.
Frontal Lobe: planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling movements, reasoning, and overall monitoring of the thinking process.

Parietal lobe: sensation

Temporal lobe: hearing, speaking, and other verbal activity.

Occipital lobe: vision
MIDBRAIN AND HINDBRAIN
Tectum: auditory and visual systems

Tegmentum: sleep, arousal, attention, muscle tone and reflexes.

Cerebellum: motor movement and coordination

Medulla: vital functions of the body such as cardiovascular system, breathing, and movement of the skeletal muscles.
