Terms

undefined, object
copy deck
Cell Membrane
Porous; protects cell, allows things in and out selectively.
Cytoplasm
soupy liquid; All other organelles float here
Nucleus
porous nuclear membrane; communicates with surrounding cytosol
DNA
In nucleus; contains genetic info., passed from parents to offspring, copied and put into new cells when they produce
Nucleolus
In nucleus; produces ribosomes
Chloroplasts
fluid called stroma, stacks of disks; site pf photosynthesis
Mitochondria
In inner membrane called cristae; Use oxygen to make ATP, process is aerobic respiration: very abundant in cells that need lots of energy
Vacuoles
small containers; single membrane surrounding solid/liquid, can contain different substances
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Network of canals that extend from cell membrane to nucleus; transports materials, two kinds: rough/smooth, smooth has no ribosomes
Ribosomes
small, dot-like, made up of RNA; site of protein synthesis, form rough ER
Golgi Body
sacs stacked like pancakes, vesicles pinch off edges; shipping dept., modifies proteins, lipids. Packages materials for export
Vesicles
liquid filled sac; shipping containers w/cells. Used for movement/export, filled with many substances.
Lysosomes
liquid filled sacs; contain digestive enzymes, break down complex molecules, can digest substances brought into cell and actual cell parts
Centrioles
short microtubes arranged in a cylinder; cell division
Cytoskeleton
skeleton; helps maintain structure, movement of cell organelles within the cell
