- Incised
- A scratched surface design.
- Space
- The emptiness or area between, around, above, below, or within objects. Shapes and forms are defined by this element.
- Emphasis
- Special stress given to an element of art to make it stand out.
- Form
- A three-dimensional volume or illusion of three-dimensional volume with the same qualities as shape. Attributes are mass and volume.
- Engobe
- A liquid used to apply pigment or color before or after the first firing.
- Slip
- A creamy mix of clay and water used as glue to attach two pieces of clay.
- Organic
- Reference to shapes having irregular edges or to surfaces resembling things existing in nature.
- Detail
- A small section of the whole.
- Color
- The visual sensation dependent on the reflection or absorption of light from a surface. Characteristics are hue, intensity and value.
- Plasticity
- Capable of being molded or shaped. The pliability of wet clay.
- Pierce
- Cutting areas for decorative effect. Cutting through or perforating.
- Coil
- A hand method of forming pottery by building up the walls with rope-like rolls of clay and then smoothing over joints.
- Rhythm
- Intentional, regular repetition of lines or shapes to achieve a specific effect.
- Negative
- The unoccupied spaces in a composition on the areas surrounding the main subject.
- Repetition
- The recurrence of the elements of art at regular intervals.
- Composition
- The organization of the elements in a work of art.
- Refine
- Free from imperfection- to make elegant or cultivated.
- Positive
- The solid areas or the main subject/shapes in a composition.
- Style
- A set of characteristics of a culture, a period of art, or a school of art.
- Trim
- The finishing process of refining a symmetrical, circular clay object on a rotating wheel.
- Process
- A series of actions, changes, or functions that bring about a result.
- Realism
- The photographic and natural representation of people, places, and things in a work of art.
- Subordinate
- Of secondary importance
- Sculpture
- Three-dimensional art that has height, width and depth. It can be viewed from more than one side.
- Media
- Particular categories of art, such as painting, sculpture and ceramics.
- Critique
- Critical evaluation or analysis of a subject.
- Rib
- A ceramic palm sized tool with one straight edge ad one curved edge.
- Kiln
- The oven used to bisque and glaze fire clay
- Pinchpot
- A clay pot formed with hands only- no additional tools
- Shape
- Two dimensional area or lane that may be open or closed, free form or geometric, found in nature or made by humans.
- Unity
- Literally, the state of being one. A perception that each part fits, harmonizes and functions well with everything else in the work.
- Geometric
- Any shape that is mathematical in origin, such as uniformly straight or curved lines.
- Applique
- A clay design attached to the surface as decoration.
- Theme and variation
- An idea or dominant feature that gives the artwork its character; the subject of a work of art, sometimes with a number of phrases or different examples.
- Movement
- A way implied or actual, of causing the eye of the viewer to travel within and across the boundary of a work of art.
- Thrown
- The process of making symmetrical, circular clay objects on a rotation wheel
- Greenware
- Ceramics that have been formed but not yet fired.
- Bone Dry
- Dry to the touch. No longer cool.
- Carve
- To cut with care and precision.
- Dominant
- The most prominent principle or the most obvious in influence or position.
- Line
- A point moving in space. It can vary in width, length, and direction.
- Function
- Designed for or capable of a specific use.
- Press
- An apparatus or machine by which a substance is cut or shaped.
- Burnish
- Polish the surface of the pot to align the clay platelets.
- Texture
- The surface quality of materials, either actual (tactile) or implied (visual).
- Bisque
- Unglazed ware that has been fired to a temperature sufficient to harden but not mature the body.
- Abstraction
- The changing, sometimes simplification, exaggeration or distortion of images, lines, shapes, and patterns in a work of art.
- Balance
- The pleasing harmony of various elements in a design, images, lines, shapes, and patterns in a work of art. It can be symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial.
- Aesthetics
- A branch of philosophy; the study of art and theories about the nature and components of the aesthetic experience
- Thumbnail
- A quick, small, preliminary idea drawing.
- Inorganic
- Not having the structure of living things-not resembling animal or vegetable forms.
- Score
- Scratching or roughing the surface to allow a second section to be firmly attached.
- Pintool
- A ceramic tool with a sharp pin tip attached to a pencil like handle.
- Shrinkage
- The contraction of clay in either drying or firing.
- Cylinder
- A parallel sided vessel.
- Craftsmanship
- Creating with skill and dexterity.
- Contrast
- Opposites, such as light and dar, rough and smooth, soft and hard, in close proximity.
- Foot
- The clay rim on the base of a pot that allows it to sit flat after firing.
- Glaze
- A glass coating melted on the surface of clay pots in the kiln.
- Slab
- An evenly flat sheet of clay.
- Lip
- The top edge of a hollow vessel or cavity.
- Symbol
- Something that stands for something else by reason of relationship, association...A visible sign of something invisible.
- Design
- A comprehensive plan, concept or organization.
