- authoritative parenting style
- disciplinary style in which children are consulted by parents in the establishment of disciplinary rules. children are reinforced for adherence to these rules, and punished firmly and consistently for nonadherence (without resorting to physical or verbal abuse)
- permissive parenting style
- disciplinary style in which parents make few demands on the child and use little punishment. parents typically shower their children with affection and go along with whatever their child wants to do; such parents avoide active guidance.
- humanistic psychology
- approach to psychology that is primarily concerned with helping individuals to reach their maximum development and that emphasizes, and tries to foster, the dignity and worth fo each human being.
- humanistic biology
- view that the basic nature of human beings is potentially good and capable of pushing people in the direction of self-relization if the right social conditions prevail.
- Self-actualization
- process whereby healthy development of people's abilities enables them to fulfill their own true natures.
- growth needs
- higher needs that may emerge once the basic needs have been met
- Jonah complex
- fear that exercising our abilities to the maximum will bring with it responsibilities and duities that we will be unable to handle; an unwillingness to sacrafice current safety and security for the unknown.

- tendency to be disrespectful, cynical, and mis-trustful
- B-love
- a mature form of love in which the person is more concerned with giving love to benifit others than in receiving love from others to gratify his or her needs

- a selfish love in which the individual is more concerned with receiving love and gratifying his/her own needs that giving love to another.
- Self-actualizers
- individuals who have gratified their basic needs and developed their potentialities to the point that they can be considered healthier, full functioning human beings.
- authoritarian parenting style
- disciplinary style in which parents discourage verbal give-and-take with their children and expect an unquestioning obedience to their judgements.
- B-cogition
- state of experiencing that is nonjudgemental and self-validating
- Peak experience
- intense, mystical experience in which an individual exists in a temporary state of joy and wonderment.

- State of experiencing that involves judgements of approval and disapproval.
