In the Periodic Table, what are periods?
The horizontal lines of rows are known as periods.
In the Periodic Table, what are Groups (or Families)?
The vertical columns are known as Groups or Families.
What's the big deal with the Periodic Table?
1. It helps to organize many of the ideas of chemistry.
2. By using the table, one can find an element that is more or less metalic, more or less acidic, etc.
Define METAL.
They are solids (except for mercury), conduct electricity, usually ductile (drawn into wires), and malleable (can be rolled into sheets).
Define NON-METAL
These exist as solids, liquids, and gases. The main feature, is that they do not conduct electricity.
Define METALLOID
An element that some of the physical characteristics of a metal but some of the chemical characteristics of a non-metal.
Describe Group 1A.
The Alkali Metals: Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr

These are solid at room temperature, and are reactive (water). Because of their reactivity, these metals are only found in nature combined in compounds.
Define Group 2A
The Alkaline Earth Metals: Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra.

These metallic elements occur naturally only in compounds. And except for Beryllium, these also react with water to produce alkaline solutions. Magnesium and Calcium are the 7th and 5th most abundant elements in the earth's crust, respectively.
Describe Group 3A
Comprised of B, Al, Ga, In, Tl.

Al is a metal of great importance.

B is mined in Death Valley, CA, and is used as a cleaning agent, antiseptic, and flux for metal work.
Describe Group 4A
Comprised of C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb

Because of the change from nonmetallic to metallic behavior, more variation occures in the properties of the elements of this group than in most others.
Describe Group 5A.
Comprised of N, P, As, Sb, Bi

N (in the form N2), makes up about 3/4 of the earth's atmosphere, and incorporated in biochemically important substances such as chlorophyll, proteins, and DNA.

P is also essential to life as an important constituent in bones and teeth, plus it also glows in the dark.
Describe group 6A
O, S, Se, Te, Po

S was known as brimstone in ancient times.

S, Se, and Te are referred to as chalcogens (from the Greek work Khalkos, for copper) because copper ores contain them.
Describe Group 7A
Known as the Halogens: F, Cl, Br, I At
From the Greek word 'hals' meaining "salt," and 'genes' meaning "forming."

These are non-metals and exist as di-atomic molecules. They combine violently with metals to form "salts."
Describe Group 8A
Noble Gases: He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn (and sometimes H). Also called Inert or Rare gases.

These are the least reactive elements.
