- standard notation
- the most familiar way of representing whole numbers, integers, and decimals
- scientific notation
- a system for writing numbers in which a number is written as a product of a power of 10 and a number that is at least 1 and 10
- factor
- one of two or more numbers that are multiplied to give a product
- expression
- a group of mathematical symbols that represents a number - or can represent a number if values are assigned to the variables in the expression
- negative number
- a number that is less than zero; a number that is left of zero on a horizontal number line and below zero on a vertical number line
- magnitude estimate
- a very rough estimate (tells whether an answer should be in the tens, hundreds, thousands ...)
- dividend
- the number that is being divided in division
- exponential notation
- a way to show repeated multiplication by the same factor
- remainder
- an amount left over when one number is divided by another number
- quotient
- the result of dividing one number by another number
- ratio
- a comparison by division of two quantities with like, or same, number of units (example: 3:5)
- divisor
- in division, the number that divides another number

- usually, a product of factors are the all the same
- exponent
- a small raised number in exponential notation that tells how many times the base is to be multiplied by itself
- power of 10
- a whole number that can be written using only 10s as factors
- base
- an exponential notation (the number that is raised to some power)
