scientific notation

factor
one of two or more numbers that are multiplied to give a product
expression
a group of mathematical symbols that represents a number - or can represent a number if values are assigned to the variables in the expression
negative number
a number that is less than zero; a number that is left of zero on a horizontal number line and below zero on a vertical number line
magnitude estimate
a very rough estimate (tells whether an answer should be in the tens, hundreds, thousands ...)
dividend
the number that is being divided in division
exponential notation
a way to show repeated multiplication by the same factor
remainder
an amount left over when one number is divided by another number
quotient
the result of dividing one number by another number
ratio
a comparison by division of two quantities with like, or same, number of units (example: 3:5)
divisor
in division, the number that divides another number
power of a number
usually, a product of factors are the all the same
exponent
a small raised number in exponential notation that tells how many times the base is to be multiplied by itself
power of 10
a whole number that can be written using only 10s as factors
base
an exponential notation (the number that is raised to some power)
