- rough endoplasmic reticulum
- the portions of the endoplasmic reticulum that contain a dense array of ribosomes
- smooth endoplasmic reticulum
- portions of the endoplasmic reticulum that do not contain ribosomes
- submucosa layer
- a layer of connective tissue located deep in a mucous membrane
- tendon
- a white fibrous cord of regularly arranged connective tissue that attaches muscles to bones
- tropic hormone
- a hormone whose target is another endocrine gland
- ultrafiltrate
- a fluid that has been filtered through a semipermeable cappillary wall, which allows small molecules (e.g., water) to pass through but holds back larger molecules (e.g., proteins)
- efferent arteriole
- a vessel of the renal vascular system that carries blood from the glomerulus to the peritubular capillary
- filtrate
- the filtered fluid; the fluid produced when blood is filtered by the endothelial-capsular membrane
- glomerous
- a cluster of capillaries that is surrounded by the Bowman's capsule of each kidney tubule
- glucocorticoids
- a group of hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex
- hilus
- an area, depression, or pit where blood vessels and nerves enter or leave an organ
- internal respiration
- the exchange of respiratory gases between blood and body cells; also reffered to as tissue respiration
- nerve
- a group of fibers (axons and / or dendrites) and their association connective tissue coursing together outside the central nervous system
- neuron
- a nerve cell, consisting of a cell body, dendrites, and an axon
- organ
- a structure composed of two or more different kinds of tissue with a specific function and usually a recognizable shape
- osmolarity
- the concentration of an osmotic solution
- peripheral nervous system (PNS)
- the portion of the nervous system that is outside of the central nervous system, comprised of nerves and ganglia
- releasing hormone
- a peptide hormone produces by the hypothalamus that stimulates or inhibits the secretion of specific hormones by the anterior pituitary
- respiration
- the overall exchange of gases between the atmosphere, blood, and body cells; consists of pulmonary ventilation ( breathing), external resperation, and internal resperation
- Islets of Langerhans
- clusters of endocrine gland cellsin the pancreas tha secrete insulin, glucogen, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide
- limbic system
- a portion of the forebrain concerened with various aspects of emotions and behavior
- meocrine gland
- a secretory cell that remains intact throughout the process of formation and discharge of secondary product
- mineral corticoids
- a group of hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex
- negative feedback
- a hmeostatic control mechanisim, wereby an increase in a particular substance or activity inhibits the process that leads to increase
- nephron
- a single excrecitory unit of the kidney
