- bore
- inside diameter of the barrel of a gun
- breechblock
- after bullet is shot, casing fires back into the breechblock
- caliber
- diameter of gun barrel, measured between opposite lands
- distance determination
- gunpowder particles and othe residues around a bullet hole are used to determine the distance from which the gun was fired
- ejector
- mechanism on a clip or magazine where the shell is forced out. Can potentilly leave identifiable markings for tracing a shell to a specific gun. extractor pulls the empty shell backwards, the ejector pushes it out
- external ballistics
- after bullet has left gun barrel. bullet drop, drag, wind, angles
- extractor
- after bullet is fired, extractor pulls shell out of barrel
- firearms identification
- Serial #, rifling markings, comparison microscope, etc..
- gauge
- diameter of a shotgun barrel; higher gauge = smaller diameter
- Greiss test
- used for finding GSR; special gel coated photographic paper to target
- grooves
- spiral pattern that gives bullet spin (known as rifling)
- internal ballistics
- the science of what goes on inside the gun
- rifling
- process of creating grooves/lands to generate spin on the bullet
- sight line
- line of fire along the weapon's sights
- terminal ballistics
- science of the impact of the projectile with its target
- trajectory
- the path of the projectile
