- Acidophile
- A microorganism that has its growth optimum between about pH 0 and 5.5
- Aerobe
- An organism that grows in the presence of atmospheric oxygen
- Aerotolerant Anaerobe
- An organism that grows equally well whether or not oxygen is present
- Alkalophile
- A microorganism that grows best at pHs from about 8.5 to 11.5
- Anaerobe
- An organism that grows in the absence of free oxygen
- Balanced Growth
- Microbial growth in which all cellular components are synthesized at constant rates relative to each other
- Barophilic (Barophile)
- Organisms that prefer or require high pressures for growth and reproduction
- Barotolerant
- Organisms that can grow and reproduce at high pressures but do not require them
- Batch Culture
- A culture of microorgs produced by inoculating a closed culture vessel containing a single batch of medium
- Cardinal Temperatures
- Minimum, Optimum, and Maximum growth temps
- Chemostat
- A continuous culture apparatus that feeds medium into the culture vessel at the same rate as medium containing microorgs is removed; the medium in a chemostat contains one essential nurtrient in a limiting quantity
- Coenocytic
- Refers to a multinucleate cell or hypha formed by repeated nuclear divisions not accompanied by cell divisions
- Colony Forming Units (CFU)
- The number of microorgs that form colonies when cultured using spread plate or pour plates; an indication of the number of viable microorgs in a sample
- Compatible Solutes
- Solutes that are compatible with metabolism and growth when at high intracellular concentrations
