allies' peace terms-germany had to: give up overseas colonies, return alsace-lorraine to france, pay $300 billion in reparations, germany is cut up into smaller country, downsize army, and accept fault for the war. they had no choice but to sign-and they did.

*******american expeditionary force********: the american troops-refused to simply 'fill in the gaps' of the french and british troops, but be their own army (the allies got a little pissy over this). They were led by john j. pershing, or 'black jack' pershing.
immidiate effects of the war on the U.S.: the economy boomed, as we supplied stuff to both sides

henry cabot lodge: disagreed with the league of nations because of article 10, which stated that the countries included had to defend each other should their territory be threatened.
battle of verdun: lasted for 10 months (trench warfare) germans lost 100,000 men trying to overrun the french forces, but the french lost even more men trying to hold their positions.
people who opposed the war: pacifists (went against their religion), socialists (believed it benifited company owners more then the workers, they thought the profit should be equally shared)
the russian revolution: the czar had to step down. it made it easier for wilson to fight with russia since he hated tyranny and was all for the people ruling themselves (even if they were commies)
the germans were forced to sign a document in a french train car by the french in WWI: hitler took the car from a french museum and forced the french to sign documents in that same car decades later.
lusitania: a british passenger ship that was torpedoed by a german u-boat off the coast of cork, ireland. it was carrying 1,200 people, 128 of them americans. this really pissed off wilson, even though it was carrying war supplies for britain...then germany realized, 'oh ****, the americans might get in the war over this, and if they do we're screwed.' so they retricted their u-boat campaign to have the u-boats surface and warn the boat before shooting it.
manfred von richtofen: the red baron (who someone thinks is sexy...even though he's been dead for 100-ish years....)
john j. pershing: american general, westpoint-black jack pershing (had black soldiers)
vonschlieffen plan: germany's plan to march through the netherlands, belgium, and into france to take over paris
cher ami (yes, the pigeon): got a medal for being shot three times in the battle of belleau wood and still delivering the message from the lost battalion.

the types of poison gas: mustard (caused blisters and burns), chlorine (person drowns in own fluids), phosgene (18x more powerful than chlorine gas & caused suffocation. it also got into the soil and stayed there for a long time)

wilson was an: idealist (and first president to meet foreign leaders on foreign soil)
the battle of argonne forest: a million+ americans participated and it lasted for 47 days. this was the final offencive of the allies. the germans were forced to retreat, and alvin york from tennasee picked off a nest of german machine guns.

direct cause of WWI: the assasination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of hungary-austria who was visiting sarajevo, the capital of bosnia. he was shot by gavrilo princip, part of the black hand terrorist group
trench warfare: (made offences long and deadly) can keep both sides in stalemates for years with few victories to show for the time-officers syncronize 'over the tops' and 'shellings' that can last for days. some soldiers would literally go insane from the shelling, and was thus called 'shell shock'. trenches were wet, and the soldiers would get gangrene, and always had lice, and huge ass rats always hanging around
battle of belleau wood: lasted for three weeks. the french general told john j. pershing to make sure to have trenches to retreat to, and pershing told him that the marines would not retreat. and they didn't. the germans gave the marines the nickname of 'devil dogs' during belleau wood. there was a battalion that was separated from the rest of the troops (called the lost battalion) they sent messages by a pigeon called cher ami who was shot tree times and recived a medal.

warmonger: someone who tries to stir up war
trench warfare: front line trench 6-8 ft deep. infested with lice and huge rats and the smell of rotting bodies. bloody because of the charges (going over the top), and each side would shell each other for long periods of time. some soldiers would become shell shocked (go insane). this could go on for years as they were stuck in a stalemate/deadlock.
teufel hunden: 'devil dogs' a nickname given to the marines by the germans during the battle of belleau wood

isolationists: americans who wanted the u.s. to stay out of world affairs

eddie richenbacker: was the american ace-shot down 26 confirmed planes-a racecar driver who started eastern airlines and the indinapolis speedway
harlem hell fighters: the 369th u.s. infantry-which was an african american unit-which fought with the french. the spent more time under fire than any other american unit. they recived the french croix de guerre medal (cross of war) and were warmly welcomed home.

when the men went to war: the women replaced them in their jobs
treaty of brest-litovsk: took russia out of the war (seriously pissed off the allies, who are STILL pissed). this made things easier for the germans because they then ony had the western front to worry about now. the germans now think they can win the war if they capture paris.

people were against the versailles treaty because: they wanted wilson to be humiliated, they thought the treaty was too harsh or too lenient, they didn't want to be involved in an 'entagling alliance'
zimermann telelgram: sent to the german minister in mexico by arthur zimmermann (the german foreign secretary) that told the minister in mexico to urge mexico to attack the u.s. if they went to war with germany. in return, the minister was to tell the mexican that they would assist mexico gain back the land that the u.s. took from them. this caused the anti-german feeling in america to SOAR.
kaiser: german for caecar, was the german emperor. Kaiser wilhelm *hoenzollern* II was the last kaiser germany ever had
