- electroencephalogram (EEG)
- identifies the electrical brain wave evoked by a stimuli-epilepsy
- positron emission tomography (PET) scan
- depicts brain activity by showing each brain areas consumption of chemical fuel- person is given temporarily radioactive glucose-shows were brain is most active during certain activities
- cerebral cortex
- control and information processing center-covers both hemispheres
- frontal lobe
- speaking and muscles movements; plans and judgment
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- head is put in a strong magnetic field-results in a detailed picture of soft tissues (ex. fluid filled areas with schizophrenia)
- functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
- detects blood rush in the brain-provides insight into how the brain divides labor
- brainstem
- oldest and central core of the brain-automatic survival functions
- medulla
- heartbeat and breathing
- reticular formation
- filters incoming stimuli and relays important information to other areas; arousal
- hippocampus
- processes memory (damage to hippocampus=unable to process NEW memories)
- amygdala
- linked to emotions, such as anger, agression, and fear
- the limbic system
- associated with emotions such as fear and agression, and drives such as hunger and sexual
- hypothalamus
- hunger, thirst, body temperature, and sexual behavior-REWARD CENTER
- pons
- coordinates movement
- thalamus
- sensory switchboard (receives information from all senses except smell)
- cerebellum
- processes sensory input, balance, judge time, modulate emotions, enables nonverbal learning and memory
- parietal lobe
- receives sensory input for touch and body positions
- occipital lobe
- visual areas; receives visual information from the opposite visual field
- temporal lobes
- includes auditory areas; receives auditory information primarily from OPPOSITE ear
- Broca's area
- directs muscle movements involved in speech; aphasia to this area: difficulty SPEAKING but ability to comprehend
- Wernicke's area
- controls language reception; involved in language comprehension and expression; HEARING words; aphasia: speak only meaningless words
- angular gyrus
- transforms words into an auditory code
