What is the methodology used in drug dectection training?
To first introduce the dog to the scent of drugs and motivate the dog to actively seek out scented aids.
Why is it important that someone other than the handler hide all aids used in a training exercise?
Because if the handler hides the training aids, the dog quickly learns to respond on the handler's scent rather than the drug scent, resulting in non-productive responses.
What is an excellent method to use to overcome a MWD's not closely examining the corners as he goes around a vehicle?
Conceal a drug/explosive training aid in a location where the MWD will detect its odor when he or she reaches the corner of the vehicle.
What is always examined FIRST in the sequence of a vehicle examination?
The exterior of the vehicle.
How often must EXPLOSIVE SAFETY TRAINING be conducted (by EOD or appropriate personnel)?
At least annually.
What is the minimum standard of proficiency to maintain certification as an explosive detector?
90 percent.
What is the rule for conducting explosives training when an electrical storm is in the area?
Must not be done when the electrical storm is within three miles of the training area.
What action should be taken if an electrical storm occurs during the explosives training period?
All training activity must be stopped and all explosives returned to the storage area.
What action should be taken if an electrical storm occurs and time doesn't allow safe return of explosives to the storage area?
Position the explosives in an open, unoccupied area at least 300 feet from occupied buildings or personnel. (Additionally, the person in charge of the explosive charge must maintain surveillance over them during this period from at least 100 feet.)
Who should be notified prior to conducting any explosives training (giving the training location and the amount and type of explosives to be used)?
The fire department.
When should the MWD be rewarded for a positive explosives response?
ONLY when the team is clear of the training or search area.
What action should be taken if the dog responds during an actual explosives search?
Immediately notify EOD personnel of the location and let EOD dispose of any suspected devices or objects. (The handler should not touch or retrieve the suspected object either during an actual search or a training exercise. Handlers will not allow the dog to scratch or paw at the object.)
