- ventilation rate that is greater than metabolically necessary, potentially leading to alkalosis.
- hyperventilation
- abnormally low blood pressure resulting ininadequate tissue profusion and oxygenation.
- hypotension
- decrease in respiraton rate with shallow depth of respiration.
- hypoventilation
- difficulty breathing in any position other than an upright position.
- orthopnea
- without fever
- afebrile
- pertaining to the apex of the heart. A site for measuring heart rate with a stethoscope.
- apical
- cessation or absence of normal spontaneous breathing.
- apnea
- deviation from the normal pattern or rhythm of the heartbeat.
- arrhythmia
- also, flat, horizontal line that separates the various waves of the ECG cycle.
- baseline
- slow, but regular heartbeat. (below 60 beats per minute)
- bradycardia
- abnormally slowed respiratory rate.
- bradypnea
- regular pattern of irregular breathing rate often seen in children or may be seen in brain dysfunction.
- cheyne-stokes
- one component of blood pressure measurment representing the lowest amount of pressure exerted during the cardiac cycle; the force exerted on the arterial walls during cardiac relaxation.
- diastole
- shortness of breath or labored/difficult breathing.
- dyspnea
- chronic pulmonary disease characterized by dilated and damaged alveoli.
- emphysema
- normal breathing
- eupnea
- having a fever
- febrile
- of the tongue, a fold of mucus membrane located under the tongue attaching the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
- frenulum
- blood pressure that is consistently above normal.
- hypertension
- increased respiratory rate and depth as seen in exercise, pain, fever, and hysteria.
- hyperpnea
- lack of color, paleness
- pallor
- inflamation of the inner ear or labyrinth
- labyrinthitis
- yellow discolorization of the skin
- jaundice
- a type of drape with an opening

- visual examination of the tissues of the cervix and vagina using a colposcope
- colposcopy
- the destruction of tissue by application of extreme cold, silver nitrate, and carbon dioxide
- cryosurgery
- complication of pregnancy that includes general edema, hypertension, proteinuria, and convulsions
- eclampsia
- tissue that resembles the endometrium invades various locations in the pelvic cavity and elsewhere

- period of development from fertilization to birth
