What has psychoeducational therapy approaches primarily directed their efforts towards?
Reducing the stress on families by educating them so that they might develop better coping skills for dealing with a disturbed family member or a troubled family relationship.
What type of information or education is offered?
Conflict prevention.

Skills for managing everyday, nonclinical situations.

Coping skills.

Working with family member w/mental disorder.

(Typically these programs involve a combination of systems theory, behavior therapy, and educational psychology)
Family peschoeducation efforts follow one of two formats:
1. Working w/ individual families.
2. Working w/ multiple families simultaneously.
What is medical family therapy?
A coordinated effort by an interdisciplinary team to treat a chronic medical illness, trauma, or disability. The thrust is not on cure as much as its on coping.
What is the goal of short-term educational programs?
This is for couples or families without a symptomatic member who wish to acquire better skills to cope with everyday relationship problems more effectively.

Marriage, or Childbirth Preparation
Marriage enrichment
Parent effectiveness
Therapist's goal
To deliver educational training, not psychotherapy.
Relationship Enhancement Programs
(4 sets of skills)
1. Self-awareness and self-expression (expressive mode).
2. Listening and reflective responding skills (empathic mode).
3. Mode switching.
4. Help one another to learn the previous skills (facilitative mode).

TWO MORE ADDED:
5. Problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
6. Maintainance and generalization skills.
Relationship Enhancement time frame?
Usually ten sessions.

PREPARE (PREmarital Personal and Relationship Evaluation) -an 11 item scored inventory. Areas include:
Marriage expectations
Communication
Sexual relationship
Personality differences
Financial management
Conflict resolution
Child rearing
Marital Enrichment Program contents
Constructive communication and conflict resolution skills.
Developing realistic attitudes and expectations about marriage.
