- narcissitic - you dont believe things really are the way they are
- distortion

twisting data to fit your perceptions - projection
- narcissistic - project your own thoughts/desires onto other people. ppl with paranoid ideation do this.
- acting out
- immature - failure to control impuleses
- hypochondriasis
- immature - believe you have aches / pains / illness to avoid conflict and responsibilities. you are dependent and whiny.
- regression
- immature - return to a more immature level of functioning
- passive - aggressive
- immature - an inefficiency to get anything done. to avoid conflict, you may agree to do something and never do it.
- schizoid fantasies
- immature - you believe you are something you are not. unrealistic. live in your own fantasy world.
- displacement
- neurotic - redirecting a source of conflict into another object that doesnt deserve that response.
- externalization
- neurotic - look to an external reason for a problem unrelated to you, thus relieving you from responsibility
- inhibition
- neurotic - resist action. bite tongue. be passive
- rationalization
- neurotic - explain, find a reason for your behavior. find an excuse. this is an internal reason (vs externalization)
- reaction formation
- neurotic - doing the opposite of what your gut tells you to do.
- repression
- neurotic - unconsciously squelch a feeling. deny a certain feeling.
- intellectualization
- talking about a conflict in a "clinical manner" without getting emotionally involved.
- humor
- mature
- anticipation
- mature - embracing a big task instead of dreading it.
- altruism
- mature - trying to make the world a better place in response to something that has happened to you
- sublimation
- mature - redirecting energies into something useful
- suppression
- mature - active effort to put the emotion asside
- asceticism
- mature - conscious self denial. say know to yourself.
- psychic determinism
- the idea that present behavior is dependent on past experiences in a cause - effect type of relationship
- preconscious
- that part of the mind that we are not acutely ware of but that can be accessed, called on
- unconscious
- that part of the mind that we are not aware of and that cannot be accessed through ordinary means. it is 'guarded'

- the intermediary b/t the id and the superego.

the idea that when you interact with people, you project your feelings, thoughts, etc that have been developed in relationships over the years
countertransferrence is the physician's feelings that he projects onto the patient - defense mechanisms
- properties of the EGO that allow us to deal with conflict. may be adaptive or pathological. narcissistic, immature, neurotic, and mature.
