Woman's Hospital (Main Function)
Childbirth services & Gynecological diseases.
Chain of Command
the organizational structure of a Given healthcare facility that indicates the person or Department responsible for every aspect of the facility's Day to day operations. if you have a question you know who is in charge. a good understanding of the main function of each dept. will makeyou an asset to patient care and overall hospital operation.
Percutaneaous Transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)
allows the doctor to reach the area of occlusion and decrease the size of the blockage using a catheter with a balloon which is inflated directly against he occlusion.
Nursing Dept. (Functions)
Provides direct care to patients.
Transitional Care Unit ( nursing Services)
Telemetry, stepdown, or direct observation unit.(DOU) patients are frequently transferred after being discharged from the critical care unit. Most of the patients on this unit have suffered a Heart attack, or are recovering from surgery or multitrauma from an accident.

Physical Therapy Department

Trauma Center (Main Function)
Deals with life or limb threatening conditions. facilities contain departments that employ highly skilled and trained personnel as well as advanced diagnostic equipment. Helipad,and Emergency Department.
Neonatology unit
cares for neonate . specially trained personnel to provide care.
cardiac catheterization Laboratories
usually perform procedures such as cardiac catheterization and type of angioplasty. Permits a a doctor to see the number of coronary vessles that are occluded (blocked)
Stress test
is a method of evaluating cardiovascular fitness. While exercising EKG is monitored.
electroencephalograms (ECG)
Provide the doctor with a visual picture of the electrical activity of the brain. Used to help doctors determine why a patient may be having seizures and to localize lesions in the brain.
Outpatient Surgury ( nursing Services)
Admitted and discharged within a few hours. ie: Plastic surgery, eye surgery, ENT (ear, nose, throat) Gastroenterologic surgery(procedures concerned with the esophagus, stomach, and intestinal tract) Urologic Surgery: Involving Kidneys, ureter, bladder, and prostate glad.

Psychiatric Department , Mental Health
concerned with behavior and coping problems. Mental healthcare workers are specially trained in handling crisis situations.

Transportation Department
Transporters take patients from their hospital room to departments such as Xray, Physical Therapy and other diagnostic or therapeutic departments.
Admissions or Admitting Department
publics first contact -Responsible for obtaining such vital info as : name, address, Doctors name, admitting diagnosis, SS# , Insurance info. ALSO responsible for Discharge paperwork to release patient from Hospital.
Diagnosis
the use of scientific and skillful methods to establish the cause and nature of an individual's illness.
Pharmacist
an excellent resource when questions arise concerning types of medicine, dose, route of giving the medication, side effects and contraindications.
Physical Therapist
is a trained individual who uses therapeutic treatments such as heat, cold, electricity, exercise, massage and ultraviolet light to improve circulation, strenghten muscles and improve range of motion in joints.
Respiratory Therapy Department
provides treatment to those for whom breathing is difficult.
Health information Services
Medical records department -responsible for compiling, storing, and retrieving every patient's medical record. Uses clerical personnel and transcriptionists.
Oncology Unit ( nursing Services)
takes care of patients who have cancer. Very intimate nursing unit because of the frequency of patients admissions
Post Partum Unit ( nursing Services)
provides care to the mother for several hours to a few days after the delivery.

Discharge Planning Department ( nursing Services)
function is to make appropriate provisions for the patient after he or she leaves the acute care hospital.
Infection control Department
responsible for developing policies and procedures concerned with reducing the risk of communicable diseases to both the staff and the patients.

Medical surgical nursing unit ( nursing Services)
cares for patients experiencing general medical problems. gives care to those who have undergone general surgery.
Geriatrics ( nursing Services)
area is concerned with giving care to people over the age of 60 years. concerned with all aspects of aging. Including social, health , psychological, and physiological issues.
radiation therapy
used for the treatment of cancer. Extrememely high doses of radiation are used in therapeutic control of cancer.
Radiology or imaging Dept.
provides valuable diagnostic information for the doctor by using radioactive substances such as x-rays, and chemicals. Xray, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Critical care units ( nursing Services)
provide care to patients who are experiencing a life threatening disorder. includes diseases, surgeries, or surgical complications. Patients with Chronic conditions require critical care.

provides medications.

Performs any surgery that can be completed within a short period of time and does not require the patient to stay overnite. Same day surgery. Diagnostic services (Functions)
diagnostic testing to provide plan of treatment and care for patient.
Elective Surgery ( nursing Services)
means that the patient's condition permitted the doctor to schedule a date and time for the surgery.
Myocardial infarction (MI)
a heart attack: a condition caused by the blockage of one or more arteries.
Pharmacy Clerk
will deliver supplies to the nursing departments and perform other functions for the pharmacist.
Acute care Hospital
facility commonly provides care to patients who have an acute health condition that requires short term medical, nursing and allied healthcare services. types: General, Woman's Pediatrics, Cardiac intervention centers, trauma centers.
Administration
Admissions, Central Purchasing, Billing, and Collections. Concerned with financial operations of the Hospital.
Emergency Department (ED)
also called Emergency Room (ER) Where patients with life or limb threatening conditions receive medical care. It has highly technical, lifesaving equipment and appropriately trained trauma team.
Billing and Collections Departments
bill patients for services rendered, interface with insurance companies, and make sure money is collected.
Critical Care
the rendering of care to patients with life threatening conditions

Prepares meals and snacks for the patients of the hospital. Also responsible for stocking all nursing units. registered dietician . Valuable resource for Patient education.

is a treatment with a special drug or drugs that are extremely toxic ( poisonous) to the cancer.

specialized nursing unit devoted to patients between the ages of 1 month and 18 years old. Must be highly skilled in technical duties and understand the psychological aspects of child development.

provides teaching and instruction to patients who are on a special diet such as diabetics, cardiac patients, and kidney patients.

Holter Monitor
a special portable heart monitor. Used to evaluate a patients heart activity for 24 hours.
Diagnostic Services
Laboratory, Radiology etc...with date or results from diagnostic tests , Physician is able to provide a diagnosis and logical plan of treatment and care for the patient.
Cardiac Intervention Center (Main Function)
Provide care to patients with Cardiac Disease.
Transitional Care Unit (TCU)
Direct Observation unit (DOU) is equipped to monitor a patient's heart rhythm and provide emergency cardiac care if needed.
helipad
is a landing area for an air ambulance.
Post Anesthesia Care (PACU) or recovery room. ( nursing Services)
The patient is closely monitored for any breathing or bleeding problems that may develop immediately following the surgery. Patient remains in recovery room close to one half the time the surgery took to complete.
Cast
a solid mold of a body part ususally made of plaster or fiberglass. Applied to affected body part to hold the bone in proper alignment for healing.
Therapeutic services
provides a form of therapy for patients. Physical therapy dept. rehabilitation, respirtatory therapy, pharmacy.
Central supply department
responsible for sterilizing all surgical instruments used throughout the hospital. It also stocks and distributes all procedure that destroys all living microorganisms on that instrument. Organizes surgical instruments into a particular combination to be used for specific procedures.
Critical Care units
contain special equipment and specially trained personnel to provide care to patients with diseases of the cardiac system.
Emergency Surgery ( nursing Services)
indicates that the patient's condition either is, or could become life or limb-threatening within a short period of time.
Respiratory Therapist
can give the patient breathing treatments in which he or she teaches the patient how to do a specific breathing exercise.

provides nursing and medical care to patients of all ages. With life or limb threatening problems.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
service offered to cardiac patients that assists them with proper exercise therapy, dietetic counseling, and stress reduction. (Cardiac Rehab) offers encouragement and hope for those recovering from Open heart Surgery, or a Myocardial infarction (MI)
Laboratory
one of the busiest in acute care hospital. provides valuable diagnostic information by analyzing blood, body secretions, and tissue samples.
Nursing Services
Includes all departments that provide direct nursing care to patients. A specific nursing unit is established to take care of the patients in each of these departments.
Education Department
provides community and staff education classes.
