What are the Foundation of type
1.top coat 2.Substrate 3.Back coat
Each particle or domain on a recording tape has three properties what are they?
1.Polarity 2.Strenght of magnetic field it hold 3.Threshold(amount of energy) needed.
What are the limiting factors of tape?
distortion and noise are limiting factors of tape.
Noise is manifested into what?
Tape Hiss?
Name a distortion component for tape?
Tape saturation.
What is Tape saturation?
Tape saturation is a distortion component that impose a fixed ceiling on the maxium signal level. any pass the saturation level will be audibly distorted.
What is Distortion?
Any alteration or change which affect the acoustical sound wave.
Whats is masking?
the concelment of a low level sound by another sound which is higher in level
10 reel equal how many feet?
2,500 feet.
2,500 Feet of tape equals?
30,000 inches
What is a Print through?
Is bleed from on layer of tape to another.
True or False? Print through cannont be prevented, only minimized.
True.
What is the solution to minimizing Print through
storing the tape tailout.
Tails out ensure what on print through?
Ensures that print through comes after the orginal signal not before it.
Whats is cross talk on tape?
Leakage of signal information to adjacent tracks
Whats is Fringing?
Leakage from one track height to another track height.
what is the cause of fringing?
Miss alignment between tape and tape head.
Miss alignment between tape and tape head results in what?
Incorrect low frequency response.
True or False? The studer A-827 Read time code
False
What is a Flyin?
Moving audio within MTR by means of a Secondary space.
What does it mean when we are comping a Track?
Moving audio within MTR from two or more source tracks to a common single destination.
What are the 4 basic steps or procedure to perform when dealing with a tape machine?
1. Clean and Demag 2.Mechanical Alignments 3.Playback Calibration 4.Record calbration.
What are the are the basic steps to demaging a tape machine.
1.Read manual 2.Clean the machine 3.Demagnetization.
What do we use to adjust tape tension?
Tentelometer
Name the all the Mechanical alignment for tape head adjustment?
Azimuth Zenith Rack wrap Height
What is the Formula for calculating tape operating levels?
MRL-Desired operating level=Vu meter or MRL-0=0vu
Give me all the MRL levels for tape machine?
185=0vu 250=+3 over 0vu 370=+6 over 0vu 520=+9 over 0vu
The Azimuth adjustment assures two things what are they?
1.For each individual head, the gap width will be equal. 2.The maximum phase coherency will be achieved between tracks.
The zenith adjustment Job is to do what?
To move the (head) so the tape has an even contact with each gap of the head.
How do you know if you have a correct Zenith alignment?
When the wear pattern is a perfect Rectangle.
How do you know if the Zenith aligment is incorrect?
When the Wear pattern is a trapzoidal.
What are the procedures of checking zenith?
1.Use a dark colored dry-Erase whiteboard marker. 2.A scrap 2 or leader tape. 3.Thorougly coat the front of the head with a marker and play tape for 10-15 sec. 4.Take tape away from head and examing its wear pattern.
Head height adjustment assures What?
That the tape tracks are verticall aligned with the head gaps.
The Wrap adjustmet help us do what?
align the head so that its facing directly forward.this places the center of the head gap in ideal contact with the tape.
The Rack adjustment or (penetration) adjusts what?
It adjust the Forward thrust of the head into thetape.Maintaining Correct contact width between head and tape.
What are the three possible methods of adjusting the (Repro) Azimuth?
1.Mono method 2.Dual trace Technique. 3.X-Y Method
Which of the three is a more Accurate Method. (A)Mono Method (B) Dual trace Technique. (C) X-Y Method.
(A) Mono Method
How would you perform The mono method.
1.Begin by locating a 8 khz tone on the reference tape 2. Pan the track 1-12 to the left and 13-24 to the right. 3.Play the reference tape and sum the tracks in to mono. Adjust the head for maxium level.
What are the steps for perfoming a Dual Trace Technique?
1.Have the 2 tracks that are not edge tracks to be connected to the inputs of the scope. 2.Locate and play the 8khz tone. The two wave should be identical and perfectly aligned.
In Dual Trace it is possible to have a full cycle out of Phase and not know just by viewing the scope; How would you check for phase?
Move the head. If the amplitude of either wave drops, the head is in correct positon. If the Amplitude rises; continue untile mazximum level is seen.
In the X/Y method how would you Go about adjusting the Repro Azimuth?
Connect Two outside tracks that are not Edge tracks ( tyoically 2-23)- one track to the x axis the other to the Y axis. 2.Locate an 8khz tone on the reference tape.
In the X/Y method how would you check phase?
Adjust head until it shows a close as possible diagonal slash.
In the X-Y method What indicates if the tracks are in phase or out of phase please Explain.
1. If the two tracks are perfectly in phase a diagonal slash will appear. 2.If the Tracks are 180 degrees out phase The diagonal slash is in the opposite direction. 3. If the tracks are 90 or 270 degrees out of phase a perfect circle will appear
What Are the Two Methods that use an oscilloscope to compare phase relationship between tracks.
X-Y method and Dual Trace.
