- Headline
- Short, contracted sentence containing a present tense action verb advertising a news story.
- Major News Story
- Main story of the day located above the fold on the upper right side.
- Fold
- the fold in the paper; major news stories are above the fold.
- Byline
- Tells who wrote the story
- Dateline
- Actually a placeline; tells where the story happened; used to contain the date.
- Wire Services
- Companies that sell news stories to papers;ex UPI, United Press.
- Cut
- Any graph or picture on the page; formerly a woodcut.
- Cutline
- Caption under the cut
- Jump
- Tells you where the story is continued.
- Index
- Table of contents for the newspaper on lower left side of the front pagr
- News briefs
- Shorts paragraphs on the front page describing articles on inside pages.
- Lead
- First 35-50 words of a news story telling who, what, when,where,why and how
- Analysis
- Word used to identify an editorial interpretation of the news
- Insight
- Same as analysis; identifies opinion.
- Inverted pyramid style
- journalistic style that puts the most important info early in the story.
- Copy
- Anything printed on the page
- Jargon
- A set of terms unique to a particular occupation
- Editorial
- article expressing opinion of the editorial writer.
