- scale
- shows the ratio between a unit of length on the map and a unit of distance on the Earth
- hemispheres
- is the term for half the globe, can be divided into Northern and Southern or Eastern and Western hemispheres
- latitude lines
- imaginary lines that run east to west, known as parallels
- key/legend
- lists and explains the symbols, lines, and colors on the map
- climate
- - marine, highland, mediterranean, steppe, desert, continental temperature, humid subtropical, tropical, tundra, and subarctic
- place
- refers to the physical and human factors that make one area different from another
- compass rose
- shows which way the directions north{N}, South{S}, East{E}, and West{W} point on the map
- maps
- there are 3 types of maps physical, political, and historical
- political map
- shows political units, such as countries, states, provinces, countries, districts and towns. Each unit is a different color, symbol or shown with a different typeface.
- absolute location
- find using coordinates of longitude and latitude
- physical map
- shows mountains, hills, plains, rivers, lakes, oceans, and other physical features of an area
- location
- where a certain area is in relation to another area
- physical geography
- involves all the natural features on the Earth; land, resources, climate, and vegetation
- longitude lines
- imaginary lines that run north to south, known as meridians
- relative location
- where a certain area is in relation to another area
- region
- can be as large as a continent or as small as a neighborhood
- map projections
- a way of showing the curved surface of the Earth on a flat map
- human environment interaction
- refers to the ways people interact with their environment
- movement
- refers to the shifting of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another
- human geography
- focuses on the people's relationships with each other and the surrounding environment
