- Angel Island

- the movement of people from one place to another
- Imperialism
- the policy of extending a nations authority over other countries by economic, political, or military means.
- Urbanization
- the growth of cities, mostly in the regions of Northeast and Midwest
- John Rockefeller
- he and his company joined with competing companies in trust agreements, he established the standard oil company.
- US Grant
- the eighteenth President of the United States (1869-1877). He achieved international fame as the leading Union general in the American Civil War
- Unions
- The act of uniting or the state of being united.
- SS Maine
- a second-class pre-dreadnought battleship (launched in 1889, sometimes referred to as an armored cruiser) whose sinking by an explosion, on February 15th 1898, precipitated the Spanish-American War.
- Populist Party
- was a relatively short-lived political party in the United States in the late 19th century. (had a lot of political power)
- Graft
- The illegal use of political influence for personal gain.
- Ellis Island
- 20% of the immigrants at ellis Island were detained for a day or more before being inspected (an inspection for immigrants)
- Andrew Carnegie
- 18 years old he worked his way up to become a private secretary to the local superintendent of the Pennsylvania railroad. He was one of the first industrial moguls to make his own fortune.
- Monopoly
- Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service
- Susan B. Anthony
- National American Woman Suffrage Association, of which Anthony was president from 1892 to 1900. In 1872 she led a group of women to the polls in Rochester, N.Y., to test the right of women to the franchise under the terms of the Fourteenth Amendment.
- Transcontinental railroad
- a railroad line linking the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts of the United States, completed in 1869
- Social Darwinism
- an economic and social philosophy- supposedly based on the biologist Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection-holding that a system of unrestrained competition will ensure the survival of the fittest
- Culture shock
- condition of disorientation affecting someone who is suddenly exposed to an unfamiliar culture or way of life or set of attitudes
- Vertical Integration
- a company's taking over its suppliers and distributors and transportation systems to gain total control over the quality and cost of its product
- Sherman Antitrust Act
- a law enaacted, in 1890, that was intended to prevent the creation of monopolies by making it illegal to establish trusts that interfered with free trade.
- Alexander Bell
- invented the telephone, it opened the way for a world wide communications network
- Women's Suffrage
- the right of women to vote. Throughout the latter part of the 19th cent. the issue of women's voting rights was an important phase of feminism feminism, movement for the political, social, and educational equality of women with men; the movement has occurred mainly in Europe and the United States. It has its roots in the humanism of the 18th cent. and in the Industrial Revolution.
- Melting Pot
- a mixture of people from different cultures and races who blend together by abandoning their native languages and cultures.
- Edison
- became a pioneer on the new industrial frontier when he established the world's first research laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Perfected light bulb, later invented an entire system for producing and distributing electrical power.
