- the study of the Earth's surface and the process that shape it, the connections between places, and the complex realtionships between people and their environments

- artifical waterways to make even more places accessible by water. ex. Panama canal to make trade route shorter and easier
- exile
- people who go to another country for safety
- megalopolis
- a very large city, a region made up of seeral large cities
- cordillera
- a related set of separate mountain ranges
- communism
- a syatem of government in which the government controls the means of production, determining what goods would be made, how much workers will get paid, and how much items will cost
- capitalism
- an economis system in which most bussinesses are privately owned (opposite of communism)
- lock
- an enclosed section of a canal, in which a ship may be raised or lowered by raising or lowering the level of water in that section : happens in Panama Canal
- developing country
- a country with reletively low industrial production, often lacking modern technology
- lichens
- tiny, brightly colored plants that make patterns on rocks in high elevation places and sheltered spots
- refugee
- a person who flees his country to escape invasion, oppression, and persecution
- per capita GDP
- the gross domestic product divided by the population
- bedrock
- solid rock underlying all loose material on the Earth's surface
- sinkhole
- a hole formed when limestone id dissolved, causing the land above to collapse
- manarchy
- a system of authoritarian government headed by a monarch- a king, a queen, shah, or sultan- whose position is usually inherited
- immigrant
- a person who moves into a country
- savanna
- a tropical grassland with scattered trees, located in the warm lands nearest the Equator
- fjord
- a narrow valley or inlet from the sea, originally carved out by an advancing glacier and filled by melting glacial ice

- a person of mixed European and Native American heritage

- when someone leaves his country without the government's permission

- a person who holds all of the power for a specific place

- a bussiness that provides a service (hotel, restauraunt, etc.)

- a small, low island or coral reef
- geothermal energy
- energy from the earth's intense interior heat, which transforms underground water to steam that can be used to heat homes or to make electricity
- maritime
- bordering on or near the sea- related to navigation and shipping
- oasis
- a place where a supply of fresh water makes it possible to support life in a dry region
- renewable resource
- a natural resource that the environment continues to supply or replaces as it is used
- emmigrant
- a person who moves into a country
- gross domestic product
- how much money a country makes in a period of time
- continental divide
- a boundary or area of high ground that seperates rivers flowing towards opposite sides of a continent
- Bedouin
- nomadic herders that have lived in the southwest asia region's deserts herding camels, goats, and sheep using surrounding resources and knowledge to survive and today settle on outskirts of cities to seel goods
