- American Anti-Slavery Society
- founded in 1833 by William Lloyd Garrison it advocated abolition and included men, women, and free blacks
- after Nat Turner revolt
- VA legislature considers abolishing slavery, but instead passes stronger laws against slave literacy, religion and gatherings
- Free African Society
- works with the abolition society, raises money to build black institutions
- Gabriel's Rebellion
- 1801 - a VA slave rallied several hundred slaves to revolt, planned to march on the Richmond capital with a flag that said "death or liberty" but a storm postponed, and the leader was hanged
- Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
- 1848 - this ended the Mexican-American War. it established the rio grande as the southern border, and gave the US Texas, and the Mexican Cession lands (CA, UT,AZ,NM, CO)
- African Methodist Episcopal Church
- 1816 this church was founded by free blacks in SC, it was destroyed after the Vesey rebellion
- Grimke Sisters
- these women were from SC but went north to participate in the abolition movement, gave testimonials based on their first hand experiences
- Martin Van Buren
- elected democrat in 1836 his presidency was plagued by the Panic of 1837,
- moral suasion
- tactic used to convince people of the worthiness of the cause using letter writing, newspapers, and petitions; women in particular participated
- Denmark Vesey
- 1822- this free black man from SC ventured to plantations talking about rebellion and planned to seize ammunition stores but before it was enacted he was hanged
- republic of texas
- elite empresarios and tejanos formed a coalition and declared themselves an independent nation (mid 1830's)
- American Colonization Society
- 1816 - worked with the gov to establish Liberia where 12,000 to 16,000 free and enslaved blacks went, but most free blacks rejected colonization
- Liberty party
- a third party (formed on abolitionist ideals) that took votes away from Clay in the election of 1844
- Consequences of Gabriel's Rebellion
- hiring out was banned, all free blacks in VA were warned to leave
- William Henry Harrison
- "Tippecanoe" - a whig nominee in 1840, he had military hero image, his running mate was Tyler
- popular sovereignty
- let the territories decide the slavery position for themselves, eventually congress adopted this option
- Wilmot Proviso
- articulated the free soil position, but was defeated
- Free Soil
- any new territory acquired needs to be free from slavery, later the position created a new political party

- written by david walker, his pamphlet was a clear call to the southern slaves to rise up

- coined in the 1840s, this was the idea the white americans had a divine right to move west and inhabit north america from coast to coast
- declaration of sentiments
- a resolution adopted at Seneca falls women's convention, the document resembled the declaration of independence, and asked for changed marriage laws
- Oregon Country
- in 1830, the first settlers were missionaries then by 1837 many more americans had taken the Oregon Trail to this new land from Independence Missouri

- white, american land and slave holders in texas who refused to assimilate into mexican culture
- Nat Turner revolt
- 1831 - this slave had visions telling him to "enact god's judgment and overthrow slavery with violence" he and his followers kill many, but in the end he and 55 others are executed
