- mystery
- a story containing clues that are used to discover why or how something happened
- randomly
- an equal chance of being chosen
- metamorphic rock
- a type of rock that forms from existing rock because of extreme changes caused by heat, pressure or chemical environments
- moon
- a natural satellite that revolves around a planet
- author's purpose
- why the writing was written, such as to inform, to entertain, to persuade or explain
- footnotes
- small notes at the bottom of page. they explain, define, or expand on information in the text
- nonrenewable resource
- a resource that can only be replenished over millions of years
- fable
- a story using animals with human qualities to illustrate a moral or lesson
- ray
- a portion of a line that begins at an endpoint and goes an indefinitely in one direction
- plane
- an undefined, two dimensional geometric surface that has no depth and no boundaries specified. A plane is determined by defining at least 3 distinct points or at least 2 distinct lines existing on the plane
- organism
- any living plant, animal, or fungus that maintains various vital processess necessary for life
- point
- a specific location in space that has no discernible length or width
- ratio
- the comparison of two quatities
- title
- most written works have a name. it is usually printed in large type than any other text in the story, article, book or poem
- captions
- found under or besides illustrations. sentences or short paragraphs that explain the contents of a phototgraph
- matter
- a solid, liquid, or gas that possesses inertia and is capable of occupying space
- range
- the lowest value in a set of numbers through the highest value in the set
- mass
- the amount of matter an object contains
- climax
- the point inthe story where the problem or conflict stops getting bigger and starts to be resolved
- mixture
- the preoduct of a thorough blending of two or more substances, not chemically combined
- moon phase
- a phase that indicates the fraction of the Moon's disc that is illuminated (as seen from Earth). the eight phases are new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent
- plane figure
- a two dimensional figure that lies entirely within a single plane
- reflection
- a transformation that produces the mirror image of a geometric figure over a line of reflection. also called "flip"
- prime number
- any whole number with only two whole number factors, 1 and itself
- organ
- a structure containing different tissues that are organized to carry out a specific function/task of the body (branin, heart, lungs...)
- polygon
- a closed-plane figure, having at least three sides that are line segments and are connected at their end points
- quotient
- the result of dividing two numbers
- microscopic
- relating to an object too small to be visible without the use of a microscope
- historical fiction
- a made up story based on real events from the past
- probability
- a measure of the likelihood that a given event will occur, expressed as a ratio of one event occuring (favorable outcomes) to the number of equally likely possible outcomes
- radius
- a line segment extending from the center of a circle or sphere to a point on the circle or sphere. plural "radii"
- product
- the result of multiplying numbers together
