- Who was Kublai Khan?
- the grandson of Genghis (Great Khan) and he was the first foreigner to rule ALL of CHINA.
- What are some important features of Japanese culture?
- got Chinese culture from Koreans, Koreans introduced them to Buddhism, other features taken from the Chinese include: writing, cooking, drinking tea, hairdressing, and a strong central government
- What was the Koryu Dynasty known for?
- Wang Kon (rebel officer) was king, modeled central government after China, and had civil service exams
- Where was the Khmer Empire located?
- on the South East Asian mainland (modern day Cambodia)
- How did Feudalism erode Imperial Authority?
- Large landowners would set up armies. Small landowners would give some of their land to the large landowners as a trade so they would not be attacked (protection from the armies of large landowners). This is a problem because the big bet BIGGER and the small get SMALLER leading to the beginning of Feudalism and localized rule

- united ALL of CHINA, opened China to greater foreign trade, and Chinese culture was tolerated and not lost

- Ghengis Khan dies and within 50 years the Mongols territory spreads from China to Poland and is the largest unified land empire in history. The Mongols then divide their HUGE empire into 4 regions

- the Mongol ways did not work in a sophisticated civilization, the Non-Mongol officials helped Kublai rule, the Mongols and the Chinese are kept apart and follow different laws, the Mongols trust foreigners more (than the Chinese) because they have no local loyalties
- Describe the rise of the Mongols.
- Mongol leader - Temujin (Gehghis Khan) united the Mongols, he was a universal leader and a brilliant organizer assembling troops into a fighting force. As a gifted strategist, he would fake a retreat and then slaughter all who chased after his troops. He used cruelty as a weapon - would kill an entire population to prove a point
- What was important about life in the Heian Period?
- the imperial court moved the capital from Nara to Heian and etiquette was very important

- in 1368 the Chinese rebels overthrew the Mongols and set up a new dynasty - Ming Dynasty - this all occured as a result of heavy spending on useless wars, public works, and luxuries for the Yuan causing the people to be overtaxed. With the death of Kublai - the Chinese are able to overthrow the Mongols
