- WASP
- hold high positions in government and business and set cultural standards that other groups are expected to live up to;
- Ethnic Groups
- groups set apart by common ancestry and cultural heritage; national origin; cultural characteristics (ex: Irish-American, Latino, Hispanic, etc.)
- Koreans
- the highest % of self-employed workers;1st generation = immigrants affiliated with the church; 2nd generation = children of immigrants the "silent exodus"
- Age and education
- We would expect that older people and lower levels of educational attainment will be more likely to demonstrate prejudice; Age and educational attainment influence levels of prejudice
- White Privilege
- an invisible package of unearned benefits that whites are unaware of (ex: they can go shopping assured that they wont be followed by store personnel)
- Genocide
- the dominant group in a society attempts to destroy the minority group (Nazi Germany)
- Aversive Racism
- Subtle, unintentional form of bias help by whites who think they are not prejudiced; this view endorses equalitarian values. ( Fair treatment of all groups.)
- Asian Americans
- success through hard work; the model minority
- One-Drop Rule
- if a person has a single drop of black blood, he or she is considered to be black
- Prejudice
- an attitude; feeling of dislike
- Dichotomy
- any splitting of a whole into exactly two non-overlapping parts. In our culture we are taught to view as white or black and no in-between; Black vs. White; no grey zones
- Discrimination
- a behavior; a denial of another's opportunities (ex: Arnold doesn't hire Catholics)
- Japanese
- relocated into facilities against their will in 1942; 1988 the U.S. government provided a monetary reward to all those who survived the camps
- Ethnic Succession
- new immigrant groups displace those previously at the bottom (ex: the different ethnic groups in boxing championships)
- Swarthy
- dark skin tone
- Double Consciousness
- African Americans see themselves as Americans but also see themselves through the eyes of whites
- Assimilation
- a minority group is absorbed into the mainstream culture; also referred to as "Melting Pot"
- Latinos/ Hispanics
- from Mexico and Cuba; Cuban immigrants were welcomed in the 1950's, when Castro emptied the mental hospitals and prisons, they were not welcomed in the 80's; Largest group are from Mexico. They have lower education and are mostly populated in the Southwest US.
- Multiculturalism
- pluralism; a minority group expresses its own culture w/o experiencing prejudice (tossed salad)
- Ku Klux Klan
- membership peaked in the 1920's in Indiana and Ohio; Anti-black; anti-jew; white power endorsers
- Individual Discrimination
- a cop gives a ticket to a speeding black man but only a warning to white speeders
- Racism
- the belief that one race is supreme; it is a social construct. We assign meanings to racial categories.
- Native Americans
- major decline due to disease; 1830 Indian Removal Act forced all tribes in the east to move west of the Mississippi (Trail of Tears)
- Racial Steering
- realtors steer nonwhites to nonwhite neighborhoods
- W.E.B. Dubois
- wrote 100 years ago saying that the problem of the 10th century will be the problem of the color line. He was right. coined the term double consciousness - African Americans have dual identities; they feel that they are caught between worlds
- Plessy vs. Ferguison
- a case in which a man was 1/8th black and he was asked to move and he wouldn't. Supreme Court said separation was ok. Legality of "separate but equal"
- Jim Crow Era
- system of black and white segregation. Segregation was legalized. It lasted from the Civil War to WWII . After the Civil War, people from the North came to the South to ensure the rights of African Americans. Once they left, segregation came back.
- Racial Groups
- set apart from others because of physical differences (ex: black, white, Asian, etc.)
- Chaldeans
- mostly in the Detroit area; catholic group originating from Iraq; They have strong family ties and are known for owning party stores and gas stations.
- Institutional Discrimination
- results from the normal operations of society; may not be intentional (ex: legacy admissions; "last hired, first fired")
- Minority Group
- defined on the basis of power, not size
- White Ethnics
- group of white Catholics and Jews. They have largely assimilated (normally takes about 3 generations) Largest European Ancestry - 1. Germans 2. Irish 3. English
- Segregation
- separation of groups (Jim Crow era in America)
- Contact Hypothesis
- interracial contact between people with equal status in cooperative circumstances lowers prejudice
- Miscegenation
- race mixing (ex: Tiger Woods)
- Chinese
- are the largest Asian American group; Low divorce rate
