- Histology
- The study of tissues.
- Basement Membrane
- A noncellular adhesive layer.
- Squamos
- Flattened
- Cuboidal
- Cube-like
- Columnar
- Column-like
- Simple
- Cells in a single layer.
- Stratified
- Cells stacked in more than one layer.
- Goblet Cells
- Mucus-secreting; found in simple columnar epithelium.
- Desmosomes
- Specific regions where calls are held together.
- Tight Junctions
- Hold the cells very close together.
- Striations
- Stripe-looking things in muscle tissue
- Intercalated Discs
- Join cardiac muscles together. These also facilitate the transmission of the electrical impulses in the heart.
- Matrix
- A background material that contains fibers.
- Mesenchyme
- An embryonic tissue from which all other tissues are formed (kind of like a stem cell for tissues).
- Dense Regular COnnective Tissue
- Composed of collagenous fibers that are parallel.
- Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
- Composed of collagenous fibers that run in many directions.
- Collagen
- A protein that makes up the fibers in connective tissue proper.
- Fibrocytes and Fibroblasts
- Also found in connective tissue proper.
- Elastin
- A protein that makes up the fibers in elastic connective tissue.
- Reticular Fibers
- Made up of reticulin.
- Adipocytes
- Technical way to say fat cells.
- Lacuna
- The cavity in cartilage that was left behind by calls that had previously occupied it. (These are those little black dots around cartilage slides)
- Perichondrium
- Dense, irregular connective tissue that is found as a thin layer on the surface of cartilage.
- Chondrocytes
- Cells that occur in hyaline cartilage.
- Blood
- A connective tissue in which the matrix is fluid and no fibers are present.
- Plasma
- The matrix of the blood.
- Erythrocytes
- RBCs
- Leukocytes
- WBCs
- Platelets
- Small cellular fragments.
