this means "The Holy City" which is refering to Jerusalem
Palestine
when rome conquered the Holy Land, they renamed it Palestina, which is Filastin in Arabic, and Palestine in English
PLO
a political movement uniting Palestinian Arabs in an effort to create an independent state of Palestine; Palestinian Liberation Organization
Arab League
an international organization of independent Arab states formed in 1945 to promote cultural and economic and military and political and social cooperation
Diaspora
the dispersion of the Jews outside Israel
Oslo Accord
a framework of peace agreed by the Israeli government and PLO in 1993. formally known as the PLO Accord, the agreement created a peace process in which Israel began handing over portions of the Occupied Territories to the Palestinians in return for recognition of Israel and an end to terroist attacks
Right to Return
the palestinian demand that all palestinians who fled the land that became Israel proper in the 1948 israeli war of independence should be allowed to return
Six-day-war
started partly over a dispute over the use of water from the Jordan River and was an Arab attempt to completely destroy Israel. This resulted to more Arab deaths than Israeli.
Fedayeen
Arab guerrillas who operate mainly against Israel
Yasser Arafat
Palestinian statesman who is chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (born in 1929)
Jihad
a holy war waged by Muslims against infidels
Anti-Semitism

United Nations
an international organization whose main goal is to keep international peace

Prime Minister of Israel during Clinton's administration; assassinated by Israeli extemists
Intifada
an uprising by Palestinian Arabs (in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank) against Israel in the late 1980s and again in 2000

places where the Palestinians were stopped and checked for explosives and where they were often harrassed
War of Independence
the Jew's way of calling the first Arab-Israeli War
Zionism
a policy for establishing and developing a national homeland for Jews in Palestine
Gamal Abdel Nasser
egyptian president, nationalize the Suez canal, modernize Egypt and end western domination
The catastrophe
the Pathe Palestinian's word for the first Arab-Israeli War
Palestinian Authority
a temporary administrative organization that governs parts of Gaza strip and West Bank
Holocaust
the Nazi program of exterminating Jews under Hitler
arab nationalism
the thought that the arabs were a distinct ethnic group because of the steady decline of the Ottoman Turkish government's authority
Operation Defense Shield
was intended to "wipe out the Palestinian infranstructure of terror"
Pan-Arabism
an ideology that teaches that all Arab states should work together, itbecame popular during the 1950s and1960s
Islamic Jihad
an Islamic extremist group active since the late 1970s

Hamas

Declaration of Britain stating Jews can have a home in Palestine
Terrorism
the use of violence as a means of political power
Temple Mount
the jewish name for the hill in the center of Old Jerusalem and a hill where the Muslims built a Mosque in Old Jerusalem and also a place where the Jewish Temple once stood
Theodor Hertzel
usually credited as the most important leader in the Zionist movement
Dome of The Rock
a shrine in Jerusalem at the site from which muhammad ascended through the seven heavens to the throne of God
anwar sadat
military leader, tried to make peace w/Israel, was assassinated
Western Wall
what remains of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem (the foundation)
Aliyas
hebrew word meaning "ascent", refers to the time when a jew called up to read the Torah in the synagogue, and also the term for a wave of Jewish immigration to the Holy Land
ariel sharon
prime minister in Israel; after he took office the violence escalated
crusades
a series of military expeditions launched by Christian Europeans to win the Holy Land back from Muslim control
