Segregation
A social system that separates minorities. (Mostly African-Americans from whites.)
Neutral
Not taking a side in a war or conflict. For the first 2 years of WW1, the U.S. was neutral, but then in 1917 we joined the Allies.
Laissez Faire
A policy where the government doesn't interfere with businesses at all. For example, under Laisseze Faire, a business could not pay insurance for its workers, and if one of the workers got hurt, the business could fire them, leaving them hurt and unemployed.
Allies
In WW1, the countries that were against the Central Powers. They were Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and in 1917, the U.S.
Sedition
Conduct or language inciting resistance to or rebellion against lawful authority
Imperialism
A policy of expanding a country's power or influence through diplomacy or military force
League of Nations
An organization of nations formed after WW1, originally suggested in Woodrow Wilson's 14 points. Although he originally suggested it, after he became ill, the U.S. never became a part of it, and since the U.S. was a world power at the time, it remained powerless.
The 14 Points
An idea of Woodrow Wilson's, these 14 points were intended to maintain peace in the world, in addition to making the world a safe place for democracy. They are:1. Open peace negotiations and treaties 2. Freedom of the seas for all nations 3. Free trade between nations 4. Reduction of a nation's arms 5. Self determination for people controlled by colonial powers 6. Return of Russian territories to Russia 7. Return of Belgium as an independent nation 8. Return of seized French territory to the French (Alsace-Lorraine) 9. Readjustment of the Italian border 10. Self determination to the peoples of Austria-Hungary 11. Self determination to the peoples of Romania, Serbia, Montenegro 12. Self determination to the peoples of Turkey 13. An independent Poland 14. A formation of an organization of nations for the purpose of guaranteeing political independence and territorial integrity (League of Nations)
Justice
Fairness. It is not just to imprison someone for a crime they didn't commit.
Central Powers
In WW1, the countries that were against the Allies. The Austro-Hungarion empire, the German empire, and the Ottoman-Turkish empire.
Political Systems
The system a government uses to govern, or set rules for the safety of, its people.
Jim Crow Laws
Laws that state "separate is equal," and so they separated African-Americans from whites. This obviously was not equal in reality, and African-Americans were treated very badly
Self Determination
The determining by the people of the form their government shall have, without reference to the wishes of any other nation, esp. by people of a territory or former colony
Nationalism
Thinking that one particular system or idea is the best purely because one's own nation does it. Being proud, and thinking that one's own nation is the best
Armistice
Agreement to stop fighting and negotiate, a temporary peace, November 1918, Germans signed armistice
