- What are 6 types of sterilization methods?
- Dry heat, boiling, steam heat, ethylene oxide gas, radiation, cold sterilization.
- How do you dry heat sterilize?
- Flaming/baking. 320* F for 1-2 hours.
- Advantage to dry heat sterilization?
- Does not dull sharp edges.
- How do you boil sterilization?
- 212*F for 30 mns.
- What's a disadvantage to boiling?
- Possible contamination during cooling.
- How do you steam heat sterilize?
- Autoclave. 250*F 15-20 mns.
- What's a disadvantage to steam heat sterilization?
- It dulls sharp edges.
- What is ethylene oxide gas sterilization used for?
- For heat-sensitive objects. some plastics.
- Who used radiation sterilization?
- The manufacturers.
- What are disadvantages to cold sterilization?
- Not true sterilization, does not kill spores, instruments not used in sterile environments.
- What are 3 indicators used when sterilizing?
- Autoclave tape, indicator tape, gas indicator tape.
- How do you know autoclave tape is working?
- The strips turn black.
- How do you know indicator strips are working?
- They say OK.
- Where do you place indicator strips?
- Inside the pack, in the center of the material - it indicates the heat has penetrated through.
- How do you know gas indicator tape is working?
- It turns red when it comes into contact with gas.
- What position do instruments need to be in when autoclaving?
- In the unlocked position. To prevent warping & loss of clamp compression.
- What should you avoid doing to the pack when autoclaving?
- Avoid sudden cooling of instruments.
- What should you place inside the tray when autoclaving?
- A cloth, to absorb moisture.
- How long are plastic packs good for?
- 1 year, if it remains sterile.
- How long are double-wrapped cloth packs good for?
- 3 months, it it remains sterile.
- How long are double-wrapped paper packs good for?
- 6 months, if it remains sterile.
- What are 3 ways to clean instruments? Not sterilizing them.
- Manual cleaning, ultrasonic cleaner, washer sterilizer.
- How do you manually clean instruments?
- Warm water +/- mild detergent, clean w/soft nylon brush-esp. hinges & serrations, rinse & dry thoroughly.
- How do you ultrasonically clean instruments?
- Rinse off blood/debris first, cleaner vibrates instruments in a liquid (open instruments, don't pile them up), immediately remove-rinse-dry thoroughly. Allow to air dry b/4 autoclaving.
- How do you washer sterilize instruments?
- Mechanical cleaner-mainly in large institutions (human hospitals).
- Cause/solution to stiff hinges on instruments.
- Debris, detergent - ultrasonic cleaning.
- Cause/solution to cracks in instruments.
- Improper use - replace instruments.
- Cause/solution to corrosion on instruments.
- Autoclave minerals - 1:1 ammonia water plus grain alcohol & rub.
- Cause/solution to misaligned jaws on instruments.
- Improper use - replace instruments.
- Cause/solution to loose screws on instruments.
- Ultrasonic cleaner - tighten screws.
- How do you lubricate instruments?
- Instrument milk (bath or spray), light application, hinges only.
- What is an instrument lubricant?
- A non-oil, light instrument oil.
- What are some desired qualities of packaging material?
- Heat resistant, lightweight, little memory (lies flat when opened), durable, selective permeability (yes to steam & gas, no to dust &/or microbes), moisture resistant, economical.
