A way of learning about the natural world through observations and logical reasoning; leads to a body of knowledge.
Science
The process of using one or more of your senses to gather information.
Observing
An observation that deals with a number or amount.
Quantitative Observation
An observation that deals with characteristics that cannot be expressed in numbers.
Qualitative Observation
The process of making an inference, an interpretation based on observations and prior knowledge.
Inferring
The process of forecasting what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.
Predicting
The process of grouping together items that are alike in some way.
Classifying
The process of creating representations of complex objects or processes.
Making Models
The ongoing process of discovery in science; the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence they gather.
Scientific Inquiry
A possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question; must be testable.
Hypothesis
A factor that can change in an experiment.
Variable
An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time.
Controlled Experiment
The one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment; also called independent variable.
Manipulated Variable
The factor that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated, or independent, variable in an experiment; also called dependent variable.
Responding Variable
A statement that describes how to measure a particular variable or how to define a particular term.
Operational Definition
Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations.
Data
The process of sharing ideas with others through writing and speaking.
Communicating
How people modify the world around them to meet their needs or to solve practical problems.
Technology
A person who is trained to use both technological and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems.
Engineer
A living thing.
Organism
The basic unit of structure and function in an organism.
Cell
Made of a single cell.
Unicellular
Consisting of many cells.
Multicellular
A change in an organism’s surroundings that causes the organism to react.
Stimulus
An action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus.
Response
The process of change that occurs during an organism’s life to produce a more complex organism.
Development
The mistaken idea that living things arise from nonliving sources.
Spontaneous Generation
An organism that makes its own food.
Autotroph
An organism that cannot make its own food.
Heterotroph
The maintenance of stable internal conditions.
Homeostasis
The scientific study of how living things are classified.
Taxonomy
The system for naming organisms in which each organism is given a unique, two-part scientific name indicating its genus and species.
Binomial Nomenclature
A classification grouping that consists of a number of similar, closely related species.
Genus
A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce.
Species
An organism whose cells lack a nucleus and some other cell structures.
Prokaryote
The dense area in a eukaryotic cell that contains nucleic acids, the chemical instructions that direct the cell’s activities.
Nucleus
An organism whose cells contain nuclei
Eukaryote
The basic unit of structure and function in living things.
Cell
An instrument that makes small objects look larger.
Microscope
A widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things.
