- Absence or cessation of breathing
- apnea
- irregular heart rhythm
- arrhythmia
- pulse that feels full because of increased power or cardiac contractions or as a result of increased blood volume.
- bounding pulse
- A slow heartbeat; a pulse below 60 beats per minute
- bradycardia
- A waxy secretion in the ear canal; commonly called ear wax.
- cerumen
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; a progressive and irreversable lung condition that results in diminished lung capcity.
- COPD
- Patterns of activity or behavior that follow day-night cycles.
- diurnal rhythm
- Difficult or painful breathing.
- dyspnea
- Pulse with regular alterations of weak and strong beats without changes in cycle.
- elastic pulse
- Elevated blood pressure of unknown cause that develops for no apparent reason; sometimes called primary hypertension.
- essential hypertension
- pertaining to an elevated body temperature
- febrile
- internal adaptation and change in response to environmental factors.
- homeostasis
- Excess of fats or lipids in the blood plasma.
- hyperlipidemia
- Increase in the depth of breathing
- hyperpnea
- High blood pressure (systolic pressure consistently above 140 mm Hg and diastolic pressure below 90 mm Hg).
- hypertension
- Pulse in which beats are occasionally skipped
- intermittent pulse
- Pulse that varies in force and frequency.
- irregular pulse
- Individual must sit or stand to breathe comfortably.
- orthopnea
- Temporary fall in blood puressure when a person rapidly changes from a recumbent position to a standing position.
- orthostatic (postural) hypotension
- Inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal.
- otitis externa
- The radial pulse is less than the apical pulse; may indicate peripheral vascular abnormality.
- pulse deficit
- Difference between the systolic and the diastolic blood pressures (less than 30 points or more than 50 points is considered normal).
- pulse pressure
- Abnormal or crackling breath sounds during inspiration.
- rales
- Fever in which temperature fluctuates greatly but never falls to the normal level.
- remittent fever
- Abnormal rumbling sounds on expiration that indicate airway obstruction by thick secretions or spasms.
- rhonchi
- Elevated blood pressure resulting from another condition.
- secondary hypertension
- Irregular heartbeat originating in the sinoatrial node(pacemaker)
- sinus arrhythmia
- Instrument that measures the volume of inhaled and exhaled air.
- spirometer
- Fainting; a brief lapse in consciouness
- syncope
- rapid but regular heart rate exceeding 100 beats per minute
- tachycardia
- Pulse that is scarcely perceptible
- thready pulse
- Pulse in which the beats vary in intensity.
- unequal pulse
- Dizziness
- vertigo
- Blood pressure that is below 90 mm Hg and diastolic pressure below 50 mm Hg.
- Hypotension
- Abnormally prolonged and deep breathing usually associated with acute anxiety or emotional tension.
- hyperventilation
