- presence of excessive bodily and facial hair in women, usually occurring in a male pattern, hereditary or hormonal imbalance
- alopecia

- spoon nail, malformation of nails where outer surface is scooped out like bowl of spoon, indicates iron deficiency anemia
- onychocryptosis
- ingrown toenail, edges of toenail curve inward and cut into skin, prone to inflammation
- onychomycosis
- fungal infection of nail, may cause nails to turn white, yellow, green, black depending on fungus and become thick and brittle
- paronychia
- acute or chronic infection of skin fold around a nail
- albinism
- inherited deficiency or absence of pigment in skin, hair and irises due to missing enzyme necessary for production of melanin
- chloasma
- aka melasma or mask of pregnancy, characterized by brownish spots on face,
- vitiligo
- loss of melanin resulting in whitish areas of skin usually on face/ hands
- petechiae
- small pinpoint hemorrhages sometimes result from fevers
- purpura
- spontaneous bruises and hemorrhages in internal organs and other tissues
- ecchymosis
- irregular area of purplish discoloration that is larger than 10 mm in diameter, bruises sometimes result of blood disorder
- hematoma
- swelling of clotted blood trapped in the tissues that is usually caused by an injury, body eventually resorbs this blood
- macule
- aka macula, discolored, flat spot that is less than 1 cm in diameter. ex: freckles or flat moles
- papule
- small raised red lesion that is less than .5 cm in diameter. small pimples and insect bites are examples. does not contain pus
- verrucae
- aka warts are small hard skin lesions caused by human papiloma virus.
- wheal
- aka welt, small bump that itches.
- purulent
- means producing or containing pus (abcesses contain pus caused by purulent bacterial infection)
- decubitus ulcer
- aka pressure ulcer or bedsore, an ulcerated area in which prolonged pressure causes tissue death
- strawberry hemangioma
- solft raised dark reddish purple birthmark, is a benign tumor made up of newly formed blood vessels
- dermatitis
- means an inflammation of the skin, takes many forms ,redness, swelling, itching
- pruritus
- aka itching associated w/ most forms of dermatitis
- eczema
- form of dermatitis that is usually associated w/ severe itching
- erythema
- any redness of the skin due to dilated capillaries including a nervous blush, inflammation, or sunburn
- erythroderma
- aka exfoliative dermatitis (ED) is a condition in which there is widespread erythema accompanied by scaling of skin
- ichthyosis
- group of hereditary disorders characterized by dry thickened and scaly skin
- lupus erythematosus
- aka systemic lupus erythematosus, autoimmune disorder characterized by red scaly rash on face and upper trunk also attacks connective tissue esp joints
- lipedema
- chronic swelling caused by collection of fat and fluid under the skin usually affects middle age women between calf and ankle
- psoriasis
- common skin disorder characterized by flare-ups in which red papules covered w/ silvery scales occur on elbows, knees, scalp, back, butt
- rosacea
- chronic condition of unknown cause that produces redness, tiny pimples, and broken blood vessels, it usually occurs on the central area of the face
- scleroderma
- an autoimmune disorder connective tissues become thickened and hardened affects joints and internal organs
- urticaria
- aka hives, are wheals caused by an allergic reaction
- xeroderma
- aka xerosis is excessively dry skin
- furuncles
- aka boils are large tender swollen areas caused by a staphylococcal infection around hair follicles or sebaceous glands
- carbuncle
- cluster of connected furuncles
- cellulitis
- an acute rapidly spreading infection w/ in the connective tissue swelling warmth and red streaks
- impetigo
- contagious bacterial skin infection pustules become crusted and rupture
- necrotizing fasciitis
- aka flesh-eating bacteria is caused by group A strep if untreated infected body tissue is destroyed and can be fatal
- tinea
- fungal infection, ringworm
- scabies
- skin infection caused by an infestation w/ the itch mite that produces distinctive brown lines and itchy rash
- pediculosis
- infestation w/ lice
- cicatrix
- normal scar resulting from the healing of a wound
- granuloma
- knotlike swellings of granulation tissue in epidermis
- keloid
- abnormally raised or thickened scar that expands beyonde the boundaries of the incision. tendency to form is inherited
- keratosis
- any skin growth such as a wart or callus in which there is an overgrowth and thickening of skin
- lipoma
- benign fatty deposit under the skin that causes a bump
- dysplastic nevi
- are atypical moles that may develop into skin cancer
- papilloma
- benign superficial wartlike growth on the epithelial tissue or elsewhere in body
- malignant melanoma
- type of skin cancer that occurs in melanocytes may spread thru lymphatic system or blood. least common most dangerous and sometimes fatal
- actinic keratosis
- skin lesion caused by excessive exposure to sun, rough red, scaly, may be precancerous
- exfoliative cytology
- technique in which cells are scraped from tissue and examined under microscope
- debridement
- removal of dirt foreign objects damaged tissue and cellular debris from wound to prvent infection and promote healing
- blepharoplasty
- aka lid lift is the surgical reduction of the upper and lower eyelids by removing excess fat skin and muscle
- rhytidectomy
- aka facelift, surgical removal of excess skin and fat for the elimination of wrinkles
