"I have no love for Mr. Proctor. it is no secret. But God I surely love."
John states his reason for not attending church services. he has no respect for Mr. Parris and despises everything that he stands for, therefore, he does not attend church. John Proctor worships God in his home instead.
"The pure in heart need no lawyers."
Mr. Danforth tells Mr. Proctor that he does not need a lawyer to present his argument if he is telling the truth. Unfortunately, in Salem, as in the world today, this advice does not hold true.
"Do that which is good, and no harm shall come to thee."
John Proctor quotes what the angel raphael said to the boy Tobais in the Bible when talking to Mary warren. he is trying to assure her that she will be safe as long as she sticks to the truth. he tells her that this will save her and should be her strength.
"Hale:There is prodigious fear of this court in the country- Danforth: Then there is a prodigious guilt in the country."
Hale is trying to convince Danforth that he should not hear any arguments from the gentlemen without lawyers present. He is trying to save their lives. He tells Danforth that the people fear the court, and that should not be. Danforth states that only people who fear the court are those that are guilty.
"I cannot lie no more. I am with God, i am with God."
Mary Warren says this as she begins to tell the truth to the court. Ironically, before the act is over, Mary Warren repeats these words as she goes back to the lies of the other girls and begs them to accept her back with them."
"My wife is innocent, except she knew a whore when she saw one."
John Proctor makes this statement as he confesses his adultery to the court in order to prove Abigail's untrustworthiness. He states that the only reason Elizabeth was even accused was because Abigail was jealous.
"There are them that cannot sing, and them that cannot weep- my wife cannot lie."
John states this in response to Judge Danforth's question about Elizabeth's honesty. The judge wants to know if Elizabeth will be able to corroborate John's testimony about Abigail's harlotry. The ironic part is that Elizabeth, who has always been totally honest, lies to protect John a moment later.
"...When you know in all your black hearts that this be fraud- God damn our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together!"
