Who was the Easter Rising planned by?
Military Council of the IRB who had infiltrated the Irish Volunteers.
Who was asked to join the Military Council in 1916 and why?
James Connolly - because the Military Council feared the COnnolly and his Citizen Army would hold a rebellion before the Military Council were ready.
How many people were there in the Citizen Army (led by James Connolly)?
200 - the Citizen Army wanted Ireland to be set up as a Socialist state.
Which foreign country supported the rebles?
The rebels had German support
What was the rebels original plan?
The rebels planned to order the Irish Volunteers to take over strategic parts of Dublin and declare a Republic. the hoped this would cause a wave of support all over Ireland and the entire nation would rise up against the British.
Why did the rebels chose 1916 to stage the rebellion?
Britain was busy fighting WW1 in Europe and so was weakened - the rebels were trying to "hit 'em when they're down" so they had a higher chance of success.
Who didn't want the Irish Volunteers involved in the Rising and why?
Eion MacNeill - because the Irish Volunteers were poorly armed (only 20% had rifles), they were totally outnumbered by the British and most of the Irish did not support them.
Who decided to support the Rising when certain papers were shown to him, and what were those papers?
Eion MacNeill - It was a false British document showing details of the arrest of the Irish Volunteer leaders. MacNeill thought it was real but it was a fake.
What was one thing that the Germans gave the Irish Volunteers?
20,000 obsolete rifles. These were supposed to arrive on the 21 April on "The Aud". The British Navy intercepted the ship before these could be landed. Roger Casement(IRB member) was arrested for organising the deal.
What was 'The Aud'?
A British ship captured by the Germans that was intercepted when trying to transport 20,000 obsolete rifles from Germany to the Rebels.
Why did MacNeill issue a cancellation notice on the 22nd April?
Because he learned that the British document was a forgery. He was so angry at being tricked and issued a cancellation notice to the Irish Volunteers.
What was supposed to happen on Easter Sunday (23rd April) and what actually happened?
Irish Volunteers supposed to report for duty to hold the Rising. The Irish Volunteers got confused by Pearse and MacNeill's differing orders and only some reported, others continued their holiday.
What happened on Monday 24th April? (after original Rising plan failed)
The Military Council decided to postpone the Rising and use the IRB and Connolly's Citizen Army.
