Terms
undefined, object
copy deck
- inherited
- transmitted through genes from parents to offspring
- cell
- small watery compartment filled with chemicals which are a copy of the organism's genome
- ribosomes
- cellular organelle that is the site of protein synthesis
- Base pair
- two bases which form a "ring of the dna ladder". In base pairing, adenine always pairs with thymine and guanine always pairs wotj cytosine
- gene expression
- the process by which proteins are made from the instructions encoded in DNA
- gene
- heredity passed from parent to offspring
- proteins
- big molecule made up of one or more chains of amino acids. There are many activities that the protein does in the cell
- chromosomes
- thread like " packages" of genes and other DNA in the nucleus of the cell
- DNA
- the chemical inside the nucleus of a cell that carries the genetic instructions for making living organisms
- genetics screening
- testing a population of group to identify a high risk of having or transmitting a specific genetic disorder
- thymine
- one of the four bases in DNA's alphabet, thymine always pairs with adenine
- RNA
- A chemical similar to a single strand of DNA. delivers DNA's genetic message to the cytoplasm of a cell where proteins are made
- nucleus
- the central cell structure that houses the chromosomes.
- cloning
- the process of making copies of dna a specific peice of DNA ( usually a gene)
- centromere
- a specialized chromosome region to which spindle fibers attach during cell division
- genome
- all the DNA contained in an organism or a cell
- genotype
- the genetic identity of an individual that does not show as outward charactoristics
- DNA replication
- the process by which the DNA double helix unwinds and makes an exact copy of itself
- candidate gene
- a gene locates in a chromosome region suspected of being involved in a disease
- enzyme
- a Protein that encourages a biochemical reaction( speeds up)
- gene pool
- the sum total of genes with all there variations
- hemophilia
- a sex-linked inherited bleeding disorder that generally only affect males
- double helix
- a structure of DNA which is in a coil shape
- dominant
- a gene that almost always results in a specific physical characteristics
- amino acids
- a group of 20 different kinds of small molecules that link together in long chains to form proteins. often referrers to as the " building blocks" of proteins
