- section of a chromosome that codes for a protien or RNA molecule
- heredity
- transmission of genetic traits from parent to offspring
- mutation
- change in the DNA of a gene or chromosome
- species
- group of organisims that look alike and are capable of producing fertile offspring in nature
- natural selection
- process by which populations change in response to their environment as indivduals better adapred to the environment leave more offspring than individuals not suited to the environment
- ecology
- the study of the interactions of living organismims with one another and with their environment
- HIV
- human immunodeficiency virus; the infections virus that causes AIDS
- cancer
- a disease characterized by abnormal cell growth
- cystic fibrosis
- fatal genetic disorder in which excessive amounts of mucus are secreted, blocking intestinal and bronchial ducts and causing dificulty in breathing
- observation
- the act of noting or percieving objects or events using the senses
- hypothesis
- a proposed explanation for an observation that can be tested by observations or experimentation
- prediction
- the expected outcome if a hypothesis is correct
- pH
- measure of the acidity of a solution, representing the hydrogen ion concentration
- experiment
- a planned procedure to test a hypothesis
- control group
- a group in an expirament that does not recieve experimental treatment
- independant variable
- factor that is varied in an expirament
- dependant variable
- variable that is measure in an experiment
- theory
- explanation based on a set of related hypothesis that have been tested and confirmed many times
- evolution
- change in the gentic makeup of a population or species over time
