- he wrote the opera the marriage of Figaro, reached peak of career. The following year, he did another work, with da Ponte again, was DonGiovanni.

- spent in poor health. Still managed to produce the Clarinet Concerto and for Viennese theater, The magic flute. he was cheered in his last days by growing popularity of the Magic Flute. One afternoon, singers from theater visited the gravely ill composer to sing through a completed movement of his Requiem. He died that same night, December 4, 1791, shortly before his 36th birthday. His favorite pupil, Franz Xavier, completed the work from the masters sketches, making some additions of his own.

Eventaully his talents were displayed in all the principal cities and courts of Germany and Austria as well as in France, England, Holland and Italy

- He became a member of a Vienna Lodge of the Order of Freemasons in 1785 and was active in Freemasonry for the remainder of his life. He wrote a number of compositions for Masonic occasions, including Mauerische Trauermusik.
