animosity
A feeling of resentment or ill will towards another. Ex: In the Middle East, there exists great animosity among different ethnic and religious groups.
perceptive
Showing keeness of insight, understanding, or intuition. Ex: Susan Abboud was a perceptive mother. She could tell when Liyana was worried.
earthy
Realistic; practical; down to earth. Ex: Sitti was an earthy woman. She did not trust modern inventions and was content to live her life in an old fashioned way.
humble
not proud or arrogant; meek; modest. Ex: "Some people say a donkey is a humble beast- unlike a proud Arabian horse, for example."
idiom
An expression whose meaning is not predictable from the literal meaning of the words Ex: It's raining cats and dogs.
garrulous
Excessively talkative especially about trival matters. Ex: When Liyana was nervous, she became garrulous, often making up nonsense words to cover her anxiety.
pessimistic
always looking at the negative side of a situation. Ex: "I will never make any friends in my new school" said Liyana in a pessimistic tone.
gregarious
Social, outgoing. Ex: Marigold's gregarious personality helped her to make friends easily.
irrevocable
incapable of being revoked; unalterable. Ex: "I think friendships are irrevocable. Once you're friends you can't turn back."
antagonist
One who opposes another; an adversary; an opponent. Ex: Lord Voldemort was an antagonist of Harry Potter.
imagery
The use of words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the senses. Ex: The use of imagery in poetry helps to create pictures in the reader's mind.
optimistic
always looking at the positive side of a situation. Ex: "I think it will be nice this weekend," said the optimistic woman.
foreshadowing
Hints or clues that a writer uses to suggest what will happen next in a story. Ex: Good readers are aware of foreshadowing used by writers.
protagonist
The main character in a drama, novel, or story. Ex: Harry Potter is the protagonist in the series of novels by J.K. Rowling.
altruistic
unselfish, gives freely to others Ex: The altruistic 8 Gold students always donate items to the food pantry drive.
