Magnificat: When Mary spoke, it was not to Elizabeth. It is a cry to God and all men. It is woven of passages from the Old Testament, esp. the prayer that Hannah had prayed at the birth of Samuel.

Zechariah: Saw an angel "standing on the right side of te altar of icense." Angel told him that his wife Elizabeth shall bear a son named John. Message was overwhelming. Linked with Samuel Samson and Jefemiah. Asked for a sign: Child should be born. Angel's name was Gabriel, who stand before God.
Micah 5:1(2): The Birth wold be in Bethlehem. "But you, Behleham-Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah from you shall come forth for me ae who is to be ruler of Israel."
"Begone, Satan": a phrase so close to the "Get thee behind me, Satan" which Christ later addressed to Peter hmself that the same Greek verb is used for both dismissals
Incarnation: Second person of the Blessed Trinity, took himself as human nature. Two natres: Divine and human. The person was God only.
Lazurus: His family may have moved from Magadala to Bethany because of the shameful life his sister Mary had lived before her repentance. Jesus raises him from the dead.
Jochim and Anna: Old tradition's way of saying Mary's arents names. They were the only father and mother in all the history of manknd who had a child who was conceived immaculate. Her parents did not know this.
"My hour is not yet come"- 'my hour': Mystery of Cana. Once he begun his public teaching, it always meant that he should die and be glorified by his father. He actually means that the moemnt has not yet come to show his power to the eyes of man. Two suprises: Mary knows that he will show it all the same time. One minute his hor had not yet come, the next it had.

Transubstantiation: Change or substance but "accidents" and apperance stays the same
Judas Gamala: Called the Galilean. Claimed that he was a successor of Herod the Great (one of the three men) Claim that they were the expected of Israel
Sadducees: Rich class. First encounters w/ Jesus- When he scourged the animal-sellers from the temple bc they owned the temple. Did not believe in the ressurection. Political than religious. Not educated. High priests appointed by Rome. Did not believe the soul was eternal
Jesus' "brothers": "brothers" means any close relation. No word for Cousin in the Jewish language. Means cousin -James, Joseph, Simon and Jude
Emmanuel: Mary shal call her son this- Isaiah.
Feast of Tabernacles: means "tents." -was originally a harvest festival. Make huts or cabins of boughs with the leaves on them and actually live in them for the seven days of the feast. On the eight day, the huts were abmdorred and the whole day was given to the Carnival. Jesus arrived in Jerusalem before it was over. Main purpose: to teach

Petra: Peter was called Petros (masculine ending) Petra (feminime.) Rock in which church would be built. Mt:16:18-19
"gates of hell": "gates" were a walled city gate expression for "the city." Hell shall not have the victory against heaven.
Jesus rejoices: "He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit" -First and last time we are told that he is rejoiceful. Recieves a revelation that God had given to "the wise and prudent." Cries out the truth of his own relation with the father. Total equality.

Myriam: Mary is our way of saying the name "Myriam." Also appears as Mariam and Mariamne- name only occurs once in the old testament. Moses' sister. Egyptian meaning
"born again": Jesus says "Unless a man to be born again of water and the holy spirit. He cannot enter in enter into the kingdom of heaven. It means entering into another, higher life, the life which gives those powers to the soul without which it would be unable to live in heaven.
Caesar Augustus: Emproror who commanded the census which brought Mary and Joseph to Bethleham at the time of Christs' birth.
Tiberius: expelled all Jews frm Rome. Ruler for most of Christ's life and at his death. Appointed pontius pilate as Provincial ruler of Judea
Joseph of Arimathea: asked Pilate for Jesus' body. Memeber of the Sanhedrin and "already a disciple, but secretly for fear of the Jews." Placed the body in a tomb he prepared for himself, close to Calvary.
Herod the Great: King of the Jews, Heard about the Messiah. Anther king of the Jews would put his worship at an end. "descendant of heroes." He was a nobody and a tyrant. Not a jew by race-circumcised. Built the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Too sophisticated to believe that heaven would send a Messiah. 1. Summon the chief priests and scribes and ask them where he was born 2. To have the strangers brought to him privately old the strangers hat they should go to Bethlehem and inquire for the child. -Must keep the matters btw himself and the gentiles. -Would kill baby, parents, and magi. 3. Men did not come back -decided to kill every baby under two in bethlehem
'work' for a Pharisee: very strict about the sabbath- nothing heavier than a fig might be carried and even distance was prescribed.. Distance was limited. This is why they were angry about Jesus' miracles on the sabbath
Herodians: men of a political cast, who wanted the kingdom of Herod the Great restored to his son Herod Antipas. This being Galilee, the Pharisees could not destroy Jesus without the cooperation of the Herod party.
Pharisees: Jesus called them white sepulchers. Pharisees litterally means "separated." From uncleanness of soul and body. Dominated the synagogues. Did not accept the remainder of the Old Testament and the writings of the commaentators and the scribes. Believed in immorality of souls. Concerned with external moral practice
Nestorius: Is said to have asserted that he could not believe that the infant at the mother's breast was God
Herodias: Wife of Herod Antipas brother. She was niece to both men, and seems to have a pechant for uncles. Daughter is Salome. Eventually married Antipas. Big scandals because divorce was not allowed.

"servant of the servants of God": headship of what the church means. Pope Gregory the Great summarizes that lesson into one phrase. Charis: "Full of frace." Form of the verv carries the sense of abundance of what? "Charis" St. Paul- sanctifying Grace. Might have been a "privilege"- that she had been chosen by God for some great work.

scribes: most of the scribes were pharisees. Were the learned ones- studied moses, the propets, and scribes who had gone before them. Jesus called them "the traditions of men." Did not understand the spirit. Hardly had a notation of what life after death was.
Bethany: Jesus is with Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Mary leaves Martha and she annoints Jesus; head and his feet with precious ointment, and wipes his feet with her hair, so that the house was filled with the odor of ointment. Anointing for the burial.
Miracles that prefigure the Eucharist: (John 6) Two miracles before the Bread of Life discourse. Multiplication of loaves, walking on water
Annas: Father-in-;aw of Caiaphas. Frightened Pilate into crucifying Jesus
Ecco Homo: Pilate says this after he is brought back to Pilate. "Look at him now!" One more effort to get Christ's enemies to see that there was no danger in this bleeding figure of mockery, no point in going on with the kill!
Malchus: Peter cut the ear off of him when Jesus was being arrested. Servant of the high priest. Christ restored the ear to its place- his last recorded miracle of healing.
Herod Antipas: Ruler in Galilee, Herods brother. Beheaded John the Baptist. He was the man that handed Jesus back to the Romans to be put to death
Psalm 22: "My God, My God why have you forsaken me." The song to which Christ alludes to on the cross. We can learn the gospels from the entire bible.
Mary and Martha: Sisters. Brother Lazarus. Jesus comes to the house and mary is at his feet while Martha is doing work. Martha asks why Jesus isn't mad that Mary is not helping her. Mary had chosen the best part. The complation of Christ was mere idiling-the highest activity of all. Mary- sitting at Jesus' feet, tomb of lazarus she fell at his feet, and at simon's banquet table she anointed his feet
Septuagint: reek. The translation of the Old Testament which the JEws of Egypt had made for themselves a century before.
Barabbas: Prisoner who was released in the trial for Jesus
Jesus' inner circle of Apostles: James, John, Peter. They go with him to the Transfiguration and in Gethsemane.

Caiaphas: High priest. Frightened Pilate into crucifying Jesus
30 pieces of silver: number Judas sold the master for. Would have supported a work man for a year.
Calvary: Golgotha the place of Jesus' crucifixion- shaped like a skull
