- The restructuring of the government and economy in the Soviet Union under Mikhail Gorbachev in the mid-1980s.

- Guerrillas who fought against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.
- Contras
- An African leader who was elected president of South Africa in 1989. Known for calling an end to apartheid and freeing Mandela in 1990.
- F.W. DeKlerk
- An Anglican Bishop who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent opposition to apartheid.
- Desmond Tutu
- The leader of China during the 1980s following Mao Zedong's death. He was known for boosting China's economy and standard of living.
- Deng Xiaoping
- The organization of Western European countries built on the ideas of free trade and economic cooperation.
- European Union (EU)
- An independent trade union, which claimed 10 million members who pressed for political change in Poland.
- Solidarity
- A leader in the fight against apartheid who was imprisoned from 1964 - 1990 and eventually became President of South Africa in 1994.

- A group formed in 1964 that represents many Palestinian nationalist groups.

- A group of revolutionaries including a large number of women and students that overthrew the Nicaraguan government in 1979.

- The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Nations whose goal is to control the price and production of oil.
- Organization of Petroleum Exporting Nations (O.P.E.C.)
- An organization established in 1912 to oppose white domination in South Africa. The group protested through marches, boycotts, and strikes.
- African National Congress
- A situation where the government spends more money than what it takes in through taxes and other sources.
- Deficit
- South African government policy calling for segregation of the races.
- Apartheid
- An individual who speaks out against the government.
- Dissident
- The leader of the Soviet Union during the 1980s and early 1990s. He is known for his work to end Cold War tensions, and reforms of the Soviet government & economy. The Soviet Union breaks apart during his rule.
- Mikhail Gorbachev
- The Islamic fundamentalist leader of Iran who came to power in 1979.
- Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini
- In 1989, demonstrators peacefully assembled to push for greater democracy in China. When the demonstrators refused to disperse the government sent in troops and tanks.
- Tiananmen Square Massacre
- The popular, energetic leader of India who fell victim to violence in 1983.
- Indira Gandhi
- Muslims who strictly follow the teachings of the Koran and reject western ideas.
- Islamic Fundamentalists
- Communist guerilla fighters led by Pol Pot, who took over Cambodia and unleashed a reign of terror.
- Khmer Rouge
- The leader of Iran from 1953 - 1979 who had western support but faced opposition from many groups at home.
- Shah Reza Pahlevi
- A policy of openness by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

- The Chinese economic reform program under Deng Xiaoping that emphasized agriculture, industry, science, and defense.
