Map Projection
Refers to the method a cartographer uses to transfer all of the information from a round earth onto a flat peice of paper. It produces distortions with regards to shape, orientation, and/or relative area
Geography
The study of places and the complex relationship between the people and their environment.
Legend or Key
Part of a map where you will find the explanation to the meaning of symbols and pictures on a map
Compass Rose
The symbol on a map which shows the directions of N, S, E, W
Cardinal Directions
The main points of the compass. North, South, East, and West
Sea, Gulf, and Bay
Names given to an indentation of the shore line of an ocean or a large body of salt water.
Mental Maps
Maps that represent the mental image that a person her of an area- even of places that we've never been. They representwhat the person knows (or feels) about the locations and characteristics of places.
Map Symbols
Can be colors, lines, dots, graphics etc...that stands for or represents something else on a map.
Hemisphere
One half of the earth. The northern hemisphere is divided from the southern hemisphere by the equator.
Scale or Map Scale
Indicates the relationship between the distances on the map and the actual distances on the earth.
Ocean
The vast body of salt water that covers nearly three fourths of the earth.
Globe
A round model of the Earth
Equator
An imaginary line around the middle of the earth. It is exactly halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. It also divides the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres.
Map
Graphic representation of the earth's surface on a peice of paper.
Intermediate Directions
The points of a compass that fall between the four cardinal points (Ex. Northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest).
Cartographer
A person who draws or makes maps.
Continent
One of the large landmasses of the earth.
