- romanticism
- a style of art that emphasizes the personal, emotional, and dramatic aspects of exotic, literary, and historical subject matter, specifically, a european style from the mid 18th century onward
- individual style
- the artist has to be in an environment free of rules. It is a result of artist's teachers, friends, environment and exposure to art of the past
- contour drawing
- a drawing done slowly, focuses on outline, more detail than a guesture drawing, focuses on outer and inner edges

- to change someones opinion

- is analysis. it is explaining and judging works of art
- narrative
- a form of visual art that tells a story

- refers to normal everyday activites/ordinary
- popart
- a style in the 1950s that used popular, mass media, symbols (such as a coke bottle) as subject matter, treating them in both serious and satirious ways

- a system for drawing objects in space as they appear to the eye
- industrial design
- artists who design all manner of products/ mostly utilitarian objects
- animation
- a series of cartoons photographed in seqhence to give the illusion of motion
- still life
- inanimate objects arranged in order to draw
- Traditional
- mostly realistic ex. portraits, landscapes, figures, still life
- focal point
- the area of the artwork where you eye is drawn (the center of intrest)
- non-objective
- no recognizable subjects-using materials as the art
- dimensial
- to create space and volume on a flat surface
- vanishing point
- a point on the eye level where lines going into space seem to converge (meet in space)
- graphic design
- commercial artists/ deals with advertising/ print media/ designing silk screens/ signs etc.

- objects are created to supported religious beliefs,,,may represent God
- cubism
- a style of art in which the subject is broken apart and reassembled in abstract form emphasizing geometric shapes

- cannot be produced by mixing colors together red, yellow, blue

- simlified subject, distorted, altered reality

- white, black, gray, and brown

- height from which viewer sees an object

- describes an objects usfulness the objects have artistic qualities in addition to their function

- combines the principles of design and the physical aspects of a painting to create a single, harmonious work. same as music
- symmetrical
- is a roughly even distribuion of visual weight or activity on each side of a central axis

- altered, simplified, or distorted

- a view of scenery as a subject

- a particular way in presenting a subject matter

- the light and darkness that is readly apparent

- art of certian periods, is often alike ex. egyptian art was determined by a rigid set of convintions. individual styles are sufficiently alike to be grouped together for study.
- complementary
- colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel ex. red and green violet and yellow blue and orange WARM : reds, yellows, oranges COOLS: Blues, greens, violets
- Aesthetics
- refers to our personal responses to works of art...used to sum up the beauty for a feeling of balance proportion and pleasiong arrangement
- intermediate colors
- produced by mixing a primary and seconday color ex. blue, green, red violet
- portraiture
- rendering of a person's head, neck, and shoulders
- architecture
- the art and science of designing building structures
- secondary colors
- produced by mixing primary colors violet, orange, green
- the figure
- representations or the human body
- asymmetrical
- larger masses on one side of the painting, may be balanced by smaller, contrasting parts on the other side

- to pass on a cultures history, folk tales, religious traditions, mythology and moral values
- Stylized
- artist takes liberties with subject, color, *emotion*
- Fashion illustration
- designs. drawings and working with the decorative and expressive qulities of clothing
- renaissance
- Re-birth in the early 1400s a culrural rebirth created a period of intense artistic activiy throughout europe lasted about 200 years
- surrealism
- a style of 20th centry art in which is combined normally ,unrealated objects in situations scenes are often dream like or set in unatural surroundings
- social comment
- visual statement about society or the world
- texture
- refers to the surface quality both actual and simulated
