- answer you get when multiplying numbers.
- negative number
- a number less than 0.
- common denominator
- a whole number that is the denominator for all members as a group of fractions.
- equivalent
- equal in value
- quotient
- answer you get when dividing numbers where the divisor is not zero.
- sum
- answer you get when adding numbers.
- approximation
- an estimate of a mathematical value that is not exact.
- difference
- answer you get when subtracting numbers.
- common factor
- a whole number that is a factor of each number in a set of numbers.
- average
- the sum of a set of values divided by the number of values.
- quadrants
- the four sections that the coordinate plane is divided.
- integers
- whole numbers and there opposites. 0 is an integer but is neither positive or negative
- positive number
- A number greater than zero.
- rational numbers
- Numbers that can be expressed as a quotient of two integers where the divisor is not zero. 1/2. .5, 1.799
- absolute value
- a number's distance from zero. It is always positive.
- opposites
- Opposites are the same distance from zero on a number line. The sum of two opposite numbers is zero.
- prime number
- a number that is divisible by itself and one only.
- commutative property
- the order of numbers does not change the result when multiplying and dividing.
- associative property
- used in addition and multiplication to group numbers for easier computations.
- inverse operations
- operations that undo each other. Addition is the inverse of subtraction. Division is the inverse of multiplication.
- distributive property
- a(b+c)= ab+ac, where a,b, and c are integers. also works for subtraction.
- number sentence
- a statement that gives the relationship between two expressions.
- additive inverse
- a number that when added to a given number results in a sum of zero.
- order of operations
- order in which to perform mathematical operations. PEMDAS
- algorithm
- a set of rules for performing a procedure.
