Coordinate Plane
A two-dimensional region determined by a pair of axes and that uses numerical values to represent the location of an object.
Coefficient
A number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression.
Natural Numbers
The set of numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, ... Also called counting numbers.
Transformation
The mapping, or movement, of all the points of a figure in a plane according to a common operation.
Rational Number
A number that can be written as a/b where a and b are integers, but b is not equal to 0.
Circumference
The distance around a circle.
Equation
A mathematical sentence that contains an equals sign.
Perimeter
The sum of the lengths of the sides of a polygon.
difference
The amount left after one number is subtracted from another number.
Translation
A transformation that "slides" each point of a figure the same distance in the same direction.
Rotation
A transformation that turns a figure about a fixed point at a given angle and a given direction.
Surface Area
The total area of the 2-dimensional surfaces that make up a 3-dimensional object.
quotient
A number that is the result of division.
Radius
The distance from the center of a circle to any point on the circle. Also, the line segment that has the center of the circle as one endpoint and a point on the circle as the other endpoint.
Dilation
A transformation that changes the size of an object, but not the shape.
Variable
A letter or symbol used to represent a number.
volume
The amount of space occupied by an object.
Domain
The set of x-coordinates of the set of points on a graph; the set of x-coordinates of a given set of ordered pairs. The value that is the input in a function or relation.
product
A number that is the result of multiplication.
Equivalent Expressions
Expressions that simplify to an equal value when numbers are substituted for the variables of the expression.
Whole Numbers
The set of numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4
sum
The number you get by adding two or more numbers together.
Range
The y-coordinates of the set of points on a graph. Also, the y-coordinates of a given set of ordered pairs. The range is the output in a function or a relation.
circumference
The distance around a circle.
surface area
The total area of the 2-dimensional surfaces that make up a 3-dimensional object.
Diameter
The distance across a circle through its center. The line segment that includes the center and whose endpoints lie on the circle.
Area of a Circle
The measurement of the region enclosed by a circle. The area of a circle is always expressed in squared units.
Volume
The amount of space occupied by an object.
Ordered Pair
A pair of numbers, (x, y), that indicate the position of a point on a Cartesian plane.
Integer
The set of numbers ...,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,
Irrational Number
A number whose decimal form is nonterminating and nonrepeating. Irrational numbers cannot be written in the form a/b, where a and b are integers (b cannot be zero). So all numbers that are not rational are irrational.
Reflection
A transformation that "flips" a figure over a mirror or reflection line.
