- flat character
- embodies one or two qualities, ideas, or traits that can be readily described in a brief summary. They are not psychologically complex characters and therefore are readily accessible to readers. Some flat characters are recognized as stock characters; they embody stereotypes such as the "dumb blonde" or the "mean stepfather." They become types rather than individuals
- plot
- the story that is told in a novel or play or movie etc.
- foreshadowing
- the act of providing vague advance indications

- protagonist
- the main character, who must overcome obstacles and resolve the conflict
- first person point of view
- the narrator tells the story from the "I" point of view

- a character who undergoes change during the story

- round character
- more complex than flat or stock characters, and often display the inconsistencies and internal conflicts found in most real people. They are more fully developed, and therefore are harder to summarize

- a quality of a given color that differs slightly from a primary color
- suspense
- excited anticipation of an approaching climax

- thesis
- a treatise advancing a new point of view resulting from research
- topic sentence
- a sentence that states the topic of its paragraph
- conflict
- an open clash between two opposing groups (or individuals)
- external conflict
- A struggle between the protagonist and some outside force
- climax
- the highest point of anything conceived of as growing or developing or unfolding
- transitions
- link ideas together, ex. furthermore, however, circle them
- exposition
- an account that sets forth the meaning or intent of a writing or discourse
- irony
- something that you thought would never happen
- static character
- a character that does not change from the beginning of the story to the end
- voice
- a means or agency by which something is expressed or communicated
- mood
- a characteristic (habitual or relatively temporary) state of feeling
